FanGraphs | Craig Edwards: The Pirates have done... basically nothing this offseason. Sure, they’re not known to spend much money, but their spending took a nosedive and fans are having some concerns, so I would definitely keep an eye on them with respect to, say, Wade Miley, Gio Gonzalez, or or Dallas Keuchel.

Baseball Prospectus | Rob Arthur ($): Back on free agents. Teams have spent less on free agents lately, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that... fewer teams are built around free agency. Teams also aren’t drafting any better in terms of percentage of team WARP, so... what gives? Teams have both increased their use of trades (hello Jerry Dipoto), and they have invested heavily in the international amateur market, including big signings like Masahiro Tanaka.

The Athletic | Ken Rosenthal & Dennis Lin ($): We just wrote about the Padres spending, and the rumors could actually be true! It is now reported that they would not rule out Manny Machado or Bryce Harper at the right price, especially with great prospects on the way. Yet it’s more likely that they make smaller moves and wait until next year or the following for a big signing, which we know they’re capable of executing.
