Morning Mound Visit: Mariners trade Graveman then trade for Anderson

Seattle sells; Seattle buys; Yankees sell

John Trupin and Grant Bronsdon | Lookout Landing: The Seattle Mariners dealt right-handed pitchers Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero to the Houston Astros in exchange for infielder Abraham Toro and right-handed pitcher Joe Smith. The Mariners entered Tuesday within striking distance of the second Wild Card spot, so they drew criticism for selling. Jerry Dipoto said that the move wouldn’t make sense on its own but would as part of a larger series.

Kate Preusser | Lookout Landing: And Dipoto was right. Later in the evening, the Mariners traded for left-handed starter Tyler Anderson. Anderson was originally traded to the Phillies, but the deal fell through on medical review. The Pirates will receive catcher Carter Bins and right-handed pitcher Joaquin Tejada in return.

Andrew Mearns | Pinstripe Alley: In another trade that doesn’t make sense on its own, the Yankees sent left-handed pitcher Justin Wilson and right-handed pitcher Luis Cessa to the Reds for a player to be named later. The move cleared two roster spots from the 40-player roster which indicates the Yankees will be adding shortly.
