Brandon Day | Bless You Boys: Spencer Turnbull will undergo Tommy John surgery. The Detroit starter will miss the remainder of the season and could miss all of 2022 as well. Turnbull had a 2.95 FIP in 50 innings this season. The highlight of his season came on May 18 when he no-hit the Seattle Mariners.

Matt Collins | Over the Monster: The Boston Red Sox will be buyers this deadline, so it’s worthwhile to look at the prospects they could include in a deal. The Red Sox are looking at a 40-player roster crunch, so players like Hudson Potts and Marcus Wilson could be on the block.

Rob Arthur | Baseball Prospectus: Shohei Ohtani is such a major draw for the Angels that the two-way star is paying for his own contract. Over 3,800 more fans attend a game when Ohtani is starting, and that extra gate revenue is more than enough to foot his low salary.

Quick Hits

The Cubs were down 6-1 entering the top of the ninth, but they rallied for six runs to beat the Cardinals 7-6.

José Abreu hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run eighth inning.

Matt Olson hit his 25th homer of the year to help the A’s sweep the Angels.
