Blake Harris | True Blue LA: Dustin May will need to undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2021 season as a result. There’s never a good time for Tommy John to be recommended, but David Price and Tony Gonsolin, the two obvious choices to replace May in the rotation, are both on the IL.

Jay Jaffe | FanGraphs: After dealing with two injury-marred seasons and opting out of 2020, Buster Posey is back to leading the Giants’ offense. Posey’s bat has led the Giants to a majors-best 17-11 record.

Rob Mains & Derek Rhoads | Baseball Prospectus $: If it feels like there have been a lot of players getting sent to the IL this year, it’s because there have been. 30 days into the season, MLB has combined for 240 IL stays not including the COVID-19 IL. That’s 27 more than the year before and 59 more than the year before that.

Quick Hits

Shohei Ohtani hit a big, beautiful home run.

The Mets turned a 4-6-3 double play with both middle infielders to the left of second base.

Cedric Mullins hit his fifth home run of the year and there was no chance it was ever going to get robbed.
