The Astros’ loss of Verlander; what the White Sox need to do to break through; the rise of sub-replacement bullpens

FanGraphs | Jay Jaffe: Justin Verlander has been shut down with a lat strain, and this could be a huge loss for a team that lost Gerrit Cole, Collin McHugh, and Wade Miley to free agency. They will need Josh James and Jose Urquidy to step up big-time for the fifth starter spot.

The Ringer | Michael Baumann: The White Sox could have a major breakout in 2020. With a rebuild culminating in the likes of Luis Robert, Nick Madrigal, and Michael Kopech coming to the fore, and signing both Dallas Keuchel and Yasmani Grandal, this could be a very big year in Chicago.

Baseball Prospectus | Rob Arthur ($): This was the first year in a long time where bullpens were worse than rotations ERA-wise, largely due to demand. This also spawned a new phenomenon of sub-replacement bullpens, possibly a sign that that trend is nearing the end of its usefulness as far as its stretched.
