The Padres add Craig Stammen; the enigma that is Robbie Ray; the AL Central is the race to watch

MLB: Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

FanGraphs | Ben Clemens: Craig Stammen has been a successful part of the Padres’ rotation, and they’re paying him just a hair under good, maybe just OK. Yet the money matches the value in $4.5 million AAV, and it’s a team that needs a lot of other things to go right before the bullpen becomes vital.

Baseball Prospectus | Jeff Wiser ($): Robbie Ray is interesting 2021 free agent candidate. While he sports elite stuff and can strike out a ton of batters, he doesn’t necessarily log a lot of innings and he has wild fluctuations in the short term in his results. Yet if he can even show a little consistency, in one way or the other, he would also be the youngest and one of the best in that underwhelming group.

The Ringer | Michael Baumann: The AL Central is probably the race to watch the most next year. The Indians have sold many pieces like Trevor Bauer and Corey Kluber, and Francisco Lindor may follow. The White Sox made big signings and have a young core, but there are still questions about what the ceiling really is. And the Twins are coming back as basically the same team that set the home run record, so it should be a fun ride.
