Welcome to ‘Marty’s Musings’, my weekly column of numbers summarizing the happenings in the baseball world. I am your guide for taking an analytic look at the news and notes throughout the game, and highlighting this week’s key pitching matchups.
This week, the White Sox add a slugger to their lineup, and we are under the 100-day mark until opening day. .
News & Notes
12 - Million dollar one-year deal the Chicago White Sox agreed to with Edwin Encarnacion. The 37-year-old first baseman and designated hitter likely will split time at both positions with Jose Abreu. The White Sox have been quite active this offseason, bolstering their rotation with Dallas Keuchel and Gio Gonzalez, in addition to inking Encarnacion.
1 - Year deal, with two player options for Dellin Betances, who signed with the Mets last week. The Mets were a mediocre team with a terrible bullpen in 2019. That bullpen basically cost the Mets a playoff berth, and they’re hoping that signing the flame-throwing Betances gives them a relief weapon they so desperately need.
2.5 - fWAR for Kole Calhoun last season. Calhoun signed a two-year $16 million contract with the Diamondbacks last week. The Angels predictably declined a $14 million option, and his salary has been practically cut in half.
78 - Total games that Corey Dickerson played in 2019, splitting his time between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Despite his injury-riddled season, the Marlins inked the outfielder to a two-year $17.5 million deal, where he’ll likely be Miami’s starting left fielder.
94 - Days until Opening Day.
