Trading for Will Smith; game theory and Grandal; the stathead Hall of Fame

MLB: San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

FanGraphs | Jeff Sullivan: The Giants likely won’t be a great baseball team this year, but Will Smith probably will be a very good reliever, so it would be in their best interest to trade him while his value is higher.

Baseball Prospectus | Rob Arthur ($): The Yasmani Grandal deal raises a lot of questions, especially about the game theory of the negotiations. If one of the better catchers in the game could be had for $18.25 million, why aren’t most teams not offering him $20 million?

The Ringer | Ben Lindbergh: The crowded ballot, older voters, and steroids really screwed up Hall of Fame voting for a while, and now, it looks.... smart? Voters are choosing players actually somewhat in line with JAWS, meaning the likes of Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, and even maybe Larry Walker and Scott Rolen will get the call, something we wouldn’t have dreamed of a decade ago.
