The loss of Lance McCullers; Adam Ottavino as one of the better relief free agents; the best defensive free agents

FanGraphs | Dan Szymborski: Lance McCullers Jr. will miss the entirety of the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so what does that mean for the Astros next year? Sure, they obviously have Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, but losing (possibly) Charlie Morton and Dallas Keuchel, as well as McCullers, could seriously hurt their rotation depth next season.

The Athletic | Nick Groke ($): The best closer on the free agent market is Craig Kimbrel, but the best reliever? That might be Adam Ottavino. With the best stats of anyone in the class, and a two-seamer and slider that could prove very durable for years to come, he may be the super-reliever teams take a shot on.

Bill James Online | Mark Simon: The best defensive free agents on the market may not be the best players, but it shows they will have fits. DJ LeMahieu was worth 18 DRS, and Ian Kinsler, while light-hitting with the bat these days, was worth 10. The best defensive catcher available is Jeff Mathis, worth about 17 runs last season.
