The Hyde-Smith donation; Bryce Harper’s glove; execs with something to prove

MLB: Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

FanGraphs | Sheryl Ring: MLB donated $5,000 to the campaign of Cindy Hyde-Smith, which has caused an uproar based on her recent racist remarks. MLB’s PAC donates to a variety of campaigns and politicians to support their goals, but this cynical excuse doesn’t excuse it.

The Ringer | Ben Lindbergh: Bryce Harper is about to sign a mega-deal, and his defense is definitely a concern. But it was only one year that it was this bad, and it wasn’t because of a decline in tools like speed, range, or arm rating, it was just flat-out missing easy plays. If he does wake up, then that and a positive offensive value puts him back on the Hall of Fame track.

ESPN Insider | Jay Jaffe ($): There are some new executives around the league, but some have more to prove than others. Farhan Zaidi has a history of success, but takes on a franchise in the Giants with a lot of tinkering to do, and Brodie Van Wagenen, for example, is an agent walking into a Mets front office largely in disarray.
