Carlos Beltran is better than people know. Everyone knows he's one of the better defensive center fielders in the league, but did you know he's averaged a little over five wins since 2002? A lot of attention was given to Beltran's 2004 - you probably remember it as the year the Astros traded for Beltran and he proceeded to go "Manny Ramirez" on the league - yet none to 2006 and 2008 despite Beltran matching and exceeding that 2004 season.
Johan Santana's first season in New York went well. Santana built upon 2007's season (4.6 wins) with a 4.8 win season. That's in no way a poor season, but it's lacking when you compare 2008 to the run Santana put up from 2004 to 2006: 7.7, 7.6, and 7.3 wins. I think it's amazing that a player can have a 5 win season and -- in comparison to his prior years - it looks like a disappointing year. How many players can say that? Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez?
