Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Please, Stop.

Quick post here, I usually tend to avoid steroids related posts, simply because I don't care for them too much, but this Roger Clemens hoopla is a joke. As a country with some economics issues and a war still going on, should we really be putting the resources into investigating entertainment? Next, who really thinks that high school kids are taking steroids and such because Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and whoever else is supposedly taking them? You know why they're taking them? I'd tend to believe it's because they can make six figures at baseball, only five at a regular job; 390K playing baseball or 40K teaching? Hm.

and
if major league players are taking steroids to get that six figure salary (or more), wouldn't those same high school kids also come to the conclusion that they can't make it themselves without taking steroids?

people seem to like to point to the serious issues facing our country and say that congress should just focus on those things or do nothing. well, i suppose that's the usual limited federal government argument and that's fine. and if people don't care about PEDs in sports and elsewhere, i guess that's fine, too. but, for the rest of us who do care, we're taxpayers, too. and i'm fairly certain no one else has the ability to put the requisite pressure on MLB (or other sports) to actually do something about this issue than congress. evidence of that is pretty clear based upon the last time there were hearings.

Exactly...
R.J...I think you nailed it with this one. Our priorities are are completely misdirected. As much as I would like to see baseball cleaned up and ensuring that these amazing athletes are protected from the risks of dangerous performance enhancing drugs, does it really need all of the attention it is getting. Doesn't Capitol Hill have larger issues to manage than listening to Roger Clemens dig himself further and further into a hole. A much as I respected his abilities as a pitcher, his performance to day was poor. Let's fix our education system so that kids don't feel the pressure to use these nasty drugs.

at the risk...
of sounding like an outdated trust-buster, the steroid hoopla reminds me about why so many other countries have governmental regulatory bodies that oversee their country's sports industry, be it pro or amateur programs. Pro sports is a multi-billion dollar industry, and a satellite industry based on gambling around it that also generates billions. I don't think any regulatory body would need to be heavy handed, but look no further than the Pete Rose or the steroid era for what this governmental body would do.
