Cluelessness and Sexism is Alive and Well in Sports

26

It's ridiculous how a multi-billion USD industry tends to ignore a sizable portion of the market. It's even more ridiculous how such a dominant aspect of American life tends to dismiss an entire gender. "As a female sports fan I would like to believe that in 2011 sports teams, leagues and companies recognize they have a very large female following and they would do their best to market not only to men, but to the knowledgeable female base as well. Within the past few months I have been led to believe the opposite."

Billy Heywood: The Silver Screen's First SABR Manager?

The movie I have selected is the 1994 classic, Little Big League. The story revolves around an 11 year old boy who lives, eats and breathes baseball... As you can see young Billy Heywood takes on baseball's conventional wisdom and successfully explains why bunting can be a bad idea. Is it possible this movie, that came out several years before Moneyball took hold in Oakland, was ahead of its time?

"In response to my last post comparing starting position players in NL East through April there was a flood of requests to do a similar visualization for pitchers. Ok, ok, it was just one commenter. Regardless, what the people want, the people get. So without further delay, I present for you NL East starters with >=10 innings pitched and their fielding independent pitching (FIP) numbers through April."

So there's a very real sense in which the very best in the world are not like us. The degree of their training puts them on a kind of autopilot that makes adjustments without necessitating the kind of conscious consideration of the problem that novices deal with. Self-awareness shuts off and the unconscious kicks in fully to take over the operation. It's not so different from breathing. If this is your model, then slumps are truly random variance. A machine can only be calibrated so finely and there will always be error. You can in fact flip 50 heads in a row. That kind of thing.

Riggleman's Awful Inning

Recounting Jim Riggleman's heinously awful managing on Saturday in the Nationals' 2-1 loss to the Giants.

If your skills are valuable enough, the rules for you are different. I don't know why, in 2011, this is news, but it is.
