Ian Kinsler: One of a kind

A look at one of the most distinct, enigmatic players in baseball. There are some mind-blowing stats at the end of the piece.

The Limits Of War (or) Ben Zobrist Isn't Really A Superstar?

2
"When you go to the individual "leaders" pages on FanGraphs, the default ranking is according to Wins Above Replacement. A lot of people -- including a lot of baseball writers -- use those pages, and are informed by them. But very few baseball writers are going to just copy those rankings onto their MVP ballots. Dave Cameron is as responsible as anyone for what happens on FanGraphs ... But is Dave Cameron going around arguing that Ben Zobrist is EXACTLY 9.3 percent better Adrian Gonzalez? I really really really doubt it." Rob Neyer | Baseball Nation Go read this. Right now. Then come back and smile at how often we try to remind sabermetric critics not to attack imaginary sabermetricians doing imaginary things. - jbopp

Cubs Fire Jim Hendry

+

"Most people will remember Hendry for how the past few seasons have gone, marred with losses and unlikable players like Milton Bradley and Carlos Zambrano, but Cubs fans should remember that he did take the club to the playoffs three times in his first six years on the job. Unfortunately, he eschewed his farm system for a while in favor of pursuing free agents, and it left him with a shallow, inflexible organization." Satchel Price | MLB Daily Dish

Seasons are Arbitrary Endpoints | FanGraphs Baseball

"Jerry Johnson, who leads the league in batting average against left handed pitchers faced at home for the first time in the last month of the season". ~Little Big League If seasons are arbitrary endpoints then I don't know what to think.

What To Expect From Stephen Strasburg Upon His Return - Baseball Nation

"Nationals super-pitcher Stephen Strasburg is nearly back in the majors after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The question is, what should we expect him to be going forward?" Jeff Sullivan | Baseball Nation

You're An Internet Baseball Fan, And The Royals Make You Look Stupid

2

"...But what this is, is a lesson in humility, because ultimately this game will surprise you. Opinions are fine, but in baseball you'd best be careful about expressing them with near-certainty, because nothing is certain. You can never know who's going to be good and who's going to be bad, and this year's Royals are making sure everybody, with luck, keeps that in mind." Jeff Sullivan | Baseball Nation Jeff knows I love him but sometimes it feels like there's this imaginary saber guy making definitive judgments that needs to be torn back down every once in a while. Is Jeff saying something I'm missing? Isn't this about cost rather than regression? One only need to look at Rany's musings to get some feeling that we can combine relatively young (but disappointing) players at low-ish cost for potential benefit and see the requested mea culpa coming a mile away... which won't happen because nobody I know made any definitive statements otherwise. I could be wrong.

"The only thing I ask you is to leave your CG prejudice and/or agenda right here. This is not a story about him, he is just a perfect outlier to analyze. This is a long story made predominantly out of thin air." Carlos Gonzalez, Gon on a Mountain? | Athletics Nation
