Runs Above Replacement

Are you certain that all measures are with respect to replacement level? If I’m not mistaken, UZR, which seems to be your metric for fielding runs, uses the “average player” as the means of comparison.

Nope, it's RAR.

(at least according to FG)

Actually...

You’re right and Fangraphs is wrong. They include UZR in their RAR calculation when they clearly state that the definition of their fielding runs, which is UZR, is “Fielding – Fielding Runs Above Average based on UZR.” Nice.

I also notice that the mouse-over for the RAR calc

doesn’t include base-running yet, even though it adds up properly.

A replacement level player is an average fielder, so there is no need to further adjust.

Justin, great stuff.

One suggestion for Runs Above Replacement: it would be useful to have a point that shows the net RAR. For example, if you compare the tops of the the columns, it appears that Reyes is only slightly better than Fielder (49 to 44), but in fact the difference is much more than that (49 vs. 34, after you subtract Fielder’s negatives). You could add a line or scatter series which shows the net values as a point, for easier comparison.

That's a great suggestion, actually

It does get difficult to get a quick comparative read given the need to subtract the negative RAR for each player.

+1

Casilla is the worst, most exciting infielder I have ever seen.

Thanks man.

FWIW, I know better than to make bar graphs which include negatives without also including a net marker — so I’m not sure why I didn’t this time.

Another idea is to just include a separate total RAR graph and/or a runs-to-wins converted WAR graph.
