This means there are only two possible results in the negotiations in the Pujols talks: Either he signs a contract extension with the Cardinals, or he will become a free agent this coming fall.

The plethora of semi-relevant statistics in that report is annoying...

He won his first league RBI title last year.
Wasn’t as good as people said he was until he proved it last year.
It's like he finished the article and was about to stop, but then...
“Wait a minute, I haven’t mentioned batting average, homers, or RBI in this article. Is that allowed? Hm… better throw something in there just in case.”
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I.. *sigh*
It doesn’t sound like the Cardinals want to offer him anything like that size of contract he could likely get on the free agent market, if the 7 years thing is true…
The question I have is who else will actually offer him a 10-year/$30M+ contract?
Run down the big spenders and they basically all have entrenched first basemen with big bats and big, long-term contracts:
Phils: Howard
Yanks: Tex
Sox: Gonzalex (soon enough)
Detroit: Cabrera
White Sox: Konerko
So it looks like the Cubs, Angels and Mets end up making the market for him (but who knows with the latter’s financial issues right now).

Ummmm
Hasn’t that been the only two results this whole time? Either he re-signs or becomes a free agent. Thanks for the insight Olney!
