should it say

strikeouts instead of save opportunities?

Arggh!

Totally embarrassing. I was looking at SVO but sorted by SO. I’ll fix later tonight.

Here’s the real data:
1 Francisco Cordero CIN – 18
2 Matt Capps WAS – 18
3 Heath Bell SDG – 17
4 Kevin Gregg TOR – 16
5 Jon Rauch MIN – 15
6 Jonathan Broxton LAD – 15
7 Neftali Feliz TEX – 15
8 Rafael Soriano TAM – 14
9 David Aardsma SEA – 14
10 Joakim Soria KAN – 14

There has been a lot of fretting by Rangers followers

about the high usage rate so far this year.

I’m not so sure it’s a bad thing though… yet. They are on a current pace to throw ~535 innings. 50 more innings than last season.

Not ideal, but even with the high usage so far, the Rangers have the 5th best xFIP in the AL (at 4.31). The exact same numbers they had last year with 485 IP. On the other hand, the starters continue to suck (12th in AL xFIP, just as they were last year).

For all the endless spouting of the meme about Nolan Ryan driving more IP from starters, it appears someone within the Rangers realizes that it might not hurt to shift some of these innings on the much better-performing bullpen.

Replacement pitcher as a starter: 5.75 ERA.

Replacement pitcher as a reliever: 4.75 ERA.

Number two starter: 4.00 ERA
Average reliever: 4.00 ERA

If you can deal with having extra relievers on the team or having them pitch more frequently, you’re going to probably get better production out of them than your starters, especially the 4th+ time through the order.

I disagree

the number of relief appearances per game for the Mets is way too large

by JoshNY on Jun 1, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup,

that’s a huge problem with the Mets. Jerry Manuel loves to go to his bullpen, & it’s usually the same two guys(Pedro Feliciano & Fernando Nieve, who are #1 & #3 in appearances this season).

There may be sunny days ahead.

im shocked the mets aren't leading by more.

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

What constitues a "save opportunity"

considering Belisle has been in only 22 games…
