Assuming that TZ rates him correctly

sUZR has him as roughly an average defender.

where can i find this sUZR

and what does the “s” stand for. FanGraphs’ UZR has him at +120 from ‘02-’07. You also have the 10 consecutive Gold Gloves, which are a crap award, but in Jones’ case are probably rightfully given more years than not.

sUZR is UZR done with STATS batted ball data instead of BIZ

http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/suzr_v_buzr/

bUZR has him at +112 runs over 03-08 and zUZR has him at -5 during that span. The difference is presumably caused by batted ball error collecting. Ergo, it appears that Jones may not be as good as Rally and FanGraphs have him.

Yeah, his whole candidacy comes down to his defense

His offense is good but certainly not Hall-worthy. If he was truly a special defender in center field for that long, he’s a Hall of Famer. If he was merely above average or slightly less than that, then no, I don’t see how he gets in.

“He’ll be hard pressed to catch Edmonds, who is now padding his totals with Milwaukee, but Jones is young enough to hope for a few more seasons of average-ish play in him.”

If you line up each of their best 11 seasons by WAR, they come out really close [Edmonds 63, Jones 60. If Jones can put 4 2.1 seasons, plus match whatever Edmonds does for the rest of his career on top of that, then they’d be about dead even.

With Edmonds at just 3.4 total WAR in his age 36-39 seasons, I can’t imagine that extra little bit will be all that much. Even considering Jones’ poor 2008-2009, I think he has a pretty decent shot to catch up.
