It seems inevitable
that terms WAR and wOBA and the like will be commonplace in mainstream baseball circles at some point. The rise of OPS’s popularity is evidence of that, I think. But I wonder if new metrics will just be rattled off as types of unquestionable dogma without real understanding of their implications, the same way batting average and RBI are now.
You have to change attitudes as well, and I’m not very optimistic about that occurring. But I’m a natural pessimist, I suppose.
