Sky's Bet Tracker
Every season I find myself making performance bets with various people around the intertubes. I usually take the side of The Data and I usually win (thank you, selective memory.) For example, last year, I won a bet by arguing Gary Sheffield was not going to keep up his first half surge. The year before I won a bet by arguing Gabe Gross was not going to keep up his clutch-tastic streak.
My winnings?
and
Anyway, enough gloating about my laurels. I'm creating this thread to keep track of any bets I make for the 2010 season. If you'd like to offer me any in the comments, feel free. I don't bet money or anything with materialistic value, but I'm happy to move beyond avatar bets. 2010 team wins under/overs aren't a bad place to start.
Just make sure you bring an overly optimistic fanboy attitude -- I like to win.
The 2009 Bets
- Jered Weaver will have below a 120 ERA+ for 2010. Bet with Figgi4life. One week signature bet: Jered Weaver's a nice #3 starter versus Weaver's '09 wasn't a fluke.
- Jair Jurrjens will have an ERA above 3.25. Bet with @FriedBasballATL. Three tweets about how right the other person was.
- (One or two more in comments. Pull them up here.)

I bet you that Mike Pelfrey will finish the year with a lower ERA than Matt Garza.
I'll consider that, although I'm with you that Pelfrey's better than his 2009 ERA.
Curious, why’d you pick Garza?

Ok, I'll take this. I think Garza's '09 is right at what he'll do in '10, but I wouldn't mind rooting for him.
What’s our bet?

Sorry for the late reply
If I win, you need to tweet: “Mike Pelfrey is God 2.0”
If you win, I’ll tweet: “Sky Kalkman is God”

I honestly don't know who that is...
How about we bet that you can’t spell his name right at a random point in time sometime between June and August?

Finishes with an ERA+ of 120 or higher

What else is there to bet
Other than avatars and siggys?

if i lose
my siggy has to include “WTY’s ’09 was a fluke”
and if you lose, your siggy has to include “Weaver’s ‘09 wasn’t a fluke”

I don't think Weaver's '09 ERA was all that flukey, but I'll accept this bet...
IF my winnings are that your signature reads “Jered Weaver’s a nice #3 starter”. One week on the sigs. If you agree, reply so, and I’ll add it to the list.

Sure
Let’s do it

Done.
Quick thoughts: Weaver’s been really consistent in his SO, BB, and HR rates over the past three years, and therefore his FIP has hovered around 4.00. He’s seen some GBs turn into FBs, which hasn’t hurt as much as it would most pitchers, as Weaver can keep the ball in the park, hovering around 8% HR/FB over his career.
Projections and past performance agree that he’s a 4.00 (maybe slightly higher) FIP guy. Last year he hit the 120 EAR+ mark exactly, with a 3.75 ERA. I feel confident I’m getting the better odds here, and I’d put my chance of winning around 70%.
To be clear, I have nothing against Weaver and he’s definitely a valuable, above-average pitcher (and probably closer to a #2 guy than a #3 guy, even if that’s why my winning signature will show.)

This is a park effect, more than anything else.

Really? Anaheim?
If league average is about 11%, Anaheim pulls that down to like 5%?

Well, no, it's not that drastic
But it’s something like a .85 HR/FB factor.

See, I'm the guy looking to take the Scherzer side of the argument... ;)

this bet is only good (assuming you find someone to take Jackson)
if inflected by IP — so it has to be WAR, since the main alleged “issue” with Scherzer is his durability

I don’t, but for the right “odds,” I’d take Oakland

what are we betting on, exactly?

That might not seem like an accomplishment, but trust me, it’s a pretty huge improvement.

Will the combination of
Jose Guillen, Scott Podsednick, Jason Kendall, Yuni Betancourt and Rick Ankiel generate + WAR for the year as a group.
That is over 1/2 on the starting lineup penciled in for the Royals.

That's tempting.
Guillen will sap a lot, but Kendall/Pods/Yuni are around replacement and I think Ankiel could work. That’s a tough one.

It's really hard for a catcher to go negative
I’m tempted to take the over on the likelihood of Guillen not playing much, if at all
Then I remember who is in charge…
