It might not work out OK in the end, though. Either way, I'm reminded of how many pundits were so sure, just a few weeks ago, that of course Derek Jeter would never leave the Yankees. Something like that would be impossible.

Except it's really not impossible, and never was.

Rob Neyer | Sweetspot

How does this square with Posnanski's "this is so predictable" piece? Does predictable mean impossible?

Of the Yankee greats, I know Ruth finished with another club (Boston Braves?), but did many (any?) others leave at the end of their careers?

Most didn’t have a choice because of the reserve clause, but Reggie Jackson finished with Oakland, Yogi Berra finished with the Mets and Roger Maris finished with the Cardinals.

Many of the Yankee HOFers who started their careers with the Yankees stayed with the Yankees

They include:

  • Earle Combs
  • Lou Gehrig
  • Bill Dickey
  • Joe DiMaggio
  • Phil Rizzuto
  • Whitey Ford
  • Mickey Mantle

Just about all of the others finished their careers with other teams.

I am a big Neyer fan

but I still don’t see anyone presenting a possible series of events that leads to jeter signing somewhere else. Yes this is messier than I thought it would be, but still haven’t had someone tell me a possible (not even plausible) way he ends up somewhere else.

Nobody will bid even close to the 3/45 of the yanks. And Jeter knows much of his value is tied to being in NY so why would he accept even an equal offer somewhere else? The yankees can afford to wait and wait and wait, and I think they will. Even if the yankees hold the hardest possible line (not budging on this offer at ALL), he still has no other option. Its likely that they bump it a little bit to save him face (and because there’s now way their “first” offer was their “last”).
