My latest at Hardball Times breaks down a few metrics by pitch type, just covering the 2009 debuts (thus excluding some rookies).

Harry - Do you think the %'s are the best method for Pitch FX data?

It’s tough for me, not alone others, to get a reference on how good a 40% swing and miss rate is comparably.

I was talking to Tommy last night and he suggested doing pitch fx data like OPS+ is done on the 100 scale. So if a pitchers has the 40% swing and miss and the league average is 30%, he would be rated at 40/30= 133% or just 133.

Thoughts?

That's a good question

In a recent THT piece, I did just that – centered it all around 100. I had intended to follow that theme, but I had some data issues that I had to resolve last minute and this piece was plan B. It didn’t occur to me to apply that method, but you’re right, I should’ve to increase the ease of digestion.

Question – with rv100 and rv100E, would it make more sense to
(a) leave it centered around 0
(b) convert it to center around 100
© convert to to ERA like numbers

rv100 makes sense to me. No need to change

Here is what I have for example, hitters:
Alex Gordon on pitches outside the strikezone:
Take: 74%
Swinging Contact: 15%
Swinging Miss: 11%

League Average:
Take:71%
Swinging Contact: 20%
Swinging Miss: 9%

So for Alex’s Take % should it be:
1. 71%
2. +3% (showing % more than league average)
3. 104 (74%/71% * 100)

I like #3, but what would it be called Out of Strike Zone Take Plus
