Brian Fuentes strikes out Nick Green...or not.

You don't get "lucky" with the umps twice in the same at bat.

Green struck out twice, and then walked. When that happens, the game is simply compromised. The umps lost their piss on the field, or there was collaborative cheating going on. It wasn’t accidental.

Cheap wins are cheap wins. They satisfy the cheap part of the fan base, and sink the reputation of the club before the greater audience of baseball.

Umps are intimidated in Fenway. Just another part of thug life, I guess, but some of us hate to see baseball become mixed-martial arts.

Dammit, he caught me.

Obviously, I carry a flash grenade with me to every game, so that I can blind the umps whenever they are about to make a call against the Sox.

I think the truth is somewhere in between what you guys are saying

To call that “luck” was a stretch, but it’s also a stretch to call it “collaborative cheating”. The umps were clearly motivated by something, when Nick Green HIMSELF knew the game was over. (And I’m neither a Red Sox nor Angels fan, so I’m just calling it like I see it.)

But what REALLY enraged me is that the umpires- the UMPIRES filed a complaint! Reed also said something haughty, like, “I think a coach or two is going to regret his actions.” Someone needs to go all Shaq on these guys. Seriously.

I live-blogged the game for The Score

and Nick Green struck out twice.

Once, when he clearly went around on a check swing, and then on the phantom ball four.

Unbelievable.

This is why I hate the Red Sox.

They are turning into the Yankees...

You either love them or hate them. I’m on the hate side too.

I used to like the Red Sox, but lately I just plain hate them.

I'm no Red Sox fan,

but come on…THIS isn’t a reason to hate them. It’s a reason to despise those umps! There are plenty of reasons to hate the Sox, but this isn’t one of them. It’s not like Francona would get up and say, “Nah, that was two blown calls. We don’t deserve to win. Come on, guys . We’ll get ’em tomorrow.”

Brian Fuentes...

Is an awesome closer and deserves to get strikes that may be balls. But to not get strikes that are strikes kills me, and the Angels. I’m not an Angels fan, I just really like Fuentes. Even if he played for the Rockies. Go Giants.

MLB setting up the October Ratings

A thoroughly demoralizing possibility.

I hid some comments that were rude. Please play nice.

I do agree Rev should back up any implied allegations with something substantive; we’re not here just to stir the pot.

Thanks, everyone.

the entire premise of Tommy's thread is to stir the pot.

You can easily use the same zone plots for all pitchers in this game and come to the same conclusion. Pull up Daniel Bard’s for example. Should have had Aybar down 0-2 instead of 1-1, Abreu 1-1 instead of 2-0…and all on the same non-low strike. Why the selective choice of data when Tommy very well knows that every single pitcher’s K-box looked like that? I expect more from someone who understands data, especially when all it does is stir conspiracy theories from the intellectually challenged when the actual evidence stands contra to that conclusion.

Bad Umping

Looking over all the pitchers he seemed to be calling the zone about 2 inches up. You can see almost every pitcher has several balls called on pitches up about 1.5-2 inches in the zone according to Pitch F/x.

No wonder it was a high scoring game.

Working with 3/4ths of the zone will do that.

I don't disagree...

but it clearly refutes the “bias” claim.

by Buzzy on Sep 17, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're not addressing the "checked" swing.

Green struck out TWICE in the same at bat.

When the strikeout decides the game, you don’t get it wrong twice in the same plate appearance, in two different ways.

Green visibly knew he was out, and even ESPN, ever the Sox pimps, shook their heads at this one.

by Turks Teeth on Sep 17, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please

I know you have an axe to grind, but do you honestly thing check swings are consistently called in baseball? Nothing is more of a judgement call. Are you telling me that after I have clearly refuted the bias argument on called strikes that you are going to hang your hat of proof of some sort of Sox conspiracy on a check swing call? Pathetic.

by Buzzy on Sep 17, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why bother?

The Royals won Game 6 of the 1985 WS on one of the worst calls ever. Blown calls are part of the game.

Since you brought it up, Buzzy. Here’s Kazmir’s strike zone on the April 8th game v. Boston:

Kinda wide, don’t you think? I don’t recall anyone spouting stupid conspiracy theories after that game.

I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

by Drugs Delaney on Sep 17, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he should have been called out.

He didn’t – I doubt the Sox were shoving wads of cash down the umps’ pockets to make sure NICK GREEN didn’t strike out.

by bs.uf15bosox9bears23 on Sep 17, 2009 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seemed like the first-base ump

didn’t want to be the guy who ended the game on some subjective call, which like you know is an ump’s full-time job.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

Can you spot the five guys NOT in the Hall of Fame? It's easy, I separated 'em for ya. :)

Here's the full post about guys elected to the Hall of Fame primarily for their defense. Guys like Brooks Robinson, Ozzie Smith, Bobby Wallace, John Ward, and Bid McPhee stand up as definite HOFers, with many others worthy of debate (and a couple aren't worth any debate at all).

I almost made it through the whole post without comparing some HOFers to our friends Bill Dahlen, Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, Alan Trammell, and Ron Santo. Almost.
