A few weeks ago Studes joined us for a discussion about what makes for a quality graph. Somewhere in the comments I put forth the idea that everyone take a shot at improving upon the basic career WAR graph that we use a lot here at BtB. This is Studes' entry. Some of his tips include: - Make the HoF lines look different (now a shaded area instead of lines). - Use bold, easily-differentiable colors, and consider using more than color to set lines apart, such texture, thickness, and symbols. - Remove unnecessary text and make the format of the graph explain what's going on. - Remove other unnecessary ink, such as axes and legend borders. All good advice, and definitely moves us forward. But I think we can do even better, mostly with the aesthetics, but also maybe reducing empty space -- all the lines in these graphs tend to follow the same general shape. So, a challenge to you. Take this another step forward. Show us what you've got to help make WAR graphs pretty and useful.
