From the Dodgers/Mets game last night. Umpires can get away with and have gotten away with calling those pitches against left handed batters for years. Why?

Because that's the mythical "wheel house" of lefty batters, so the umps figure it should be a strike for having the balls to throw there?

Okay, it's kind of ridiculous to say that the strike zone there accurately reflects reality
This is a case where the umpire know where the batter is standing and other things. The fact that all of the “missed” calls were in the same place, means he was clearly opperating out of a tangible zone.

Looks like Brooks' strike zone is a bit narrower than the typically called strike zone (24 inches).
But the general point holds, as Graham once pointed out…
