BtB Trade Deadline Open Discussion
This thread is for reporting and discussing anything related to today's trade deadline activity. Feel free to throw out questions for others to answer or share your own thoughts on deals and rumors. You could even suggest trades that should be made for all the GM's taking time out of their days to read BtB.
We won't be reporting all the rumor mongering (check out MLB Daily Dish for that) but we'll be in and out with analysis of what actually goes down and what should have gone down later today and over the next few days.
A question to start things off -- what are the biggest holes on contending teams that should be filled by trades today, even by just league-average players? What are the chances they actually do get filled?

Middle Infield
The Twins’ middle infield is awful, but I’m not sure Orlando Cabrera is the guy to fill it. I’d rather have an arm.

The Marlins' 3B
I don’t like the guy we have now. Something about sub-.300 OBP’s rubs me the wrong way.
I'd imagine
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
Dodgers First Base and Catcher
Dodgers should work a deal for Adrian – trade Looney who would be a much cheaper option for SD along with some prospects. And, get rid of JMart – VMart would be an option. But, still get Halliday.
For the Cubs
Second base is the biggest hole. Mike Fontenot, Jeff Baker, and Andres Blanco don’t exactly light the world on fire. That said, all are capable defenders (in Blanco’s case, excellent) and Fontenot and Baker have good platoon splits. So I’d say if the Cubs add anyone else following the Gorzo/Grabow trade, it will be an outfield/PH type bat who can fill in for Reed Johnson while he’s out and assume pinch hitting duties from Micah Hoffpauir when Johnson returns.
If you are Epstein/Towers...
Do you trade Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell for Daniel Bard, Clay Buchholz and Lars Anderson?
I think this trade makes sense for both sides.
Red Sox should trade Papelbon
Before Lee was traded to Philly I was hoping the Red Sox could trade Papelbon and Buchholz to Cleveland for Lee. Cleveland needs relief help, which Papelbon would definitely supply. For the Red Sox, Papelbon is in decline, and with a deep bullpen, the Sox are in a good position to replace him (with Bard, or possibly even Smoltz).
Also—Red Sox are rumored to want Victor Martinez. Then they would have to get rid of LaRoche, but few contenders want him. Two possibilites are Texas and Atlanta. Do any fans of either team want LaRoche?
no one really wants alaroche
but if they were to acquire a-gone or vmart, they would have to deal laroche

Apparently the Braves wanted him back.
I agree with you, Alex, but I don’t think Cleveland would have wanted him b/c he would’ve been demanding more than they’d want to pay him. I was really hoping we could’ve worked out a deal with the Dodgers or something before they got Sherrill.
@bs_uf15bosox9be:OverTheMonster-ALLERGEN WARNING:May contain PB.
Sox need a bullpen arm
bnut they have no room for him, we would somehow have to deal one of our bad relief pitchers in the process
