Saber Sunday Game Thread: Yankees at Mets 6/28

New York Yankees at New York Mets, Jun 28, 2009 8:05 PM EDT

Happy East Coast Bias Night!

We took a break from our Sunday night game threads for the NBA Finals and Fathers Day, but we're back.  Count on this being a weekly feature from now until the end of the year.  And count on the NY/ESPN Yankees being a part of things a few more times.  Tonight's starters could provide a lot of scoring opportunities:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ZiPS RoS FIP tERA
2009 - Chien-Ming Wang Feels like 0-72
10 7 0 0 0 0 31.1 56 40 39 6 15 25 3.98 6.62

2009 - Livan Hernandez dumb 15 14 1 0 0 0 86.2 97 40 39 11 25 48 4.93 4.89

As usual, the comments section is for discussing anything baseball-related from a saber-slanted perspective, whether it's the Yankees-Mets game tonight or not.  Game time is 8:05 EDT.  Go Pirates!

I just flipped the game on

Did I miss the extensive Langerhans-Morse trade analysis?

It's coming after the Morgan-Milledge analysis.

As RJ noted, isn’t Morgan the same dude as Langerhans?

sort of

Morgan is an underrated player — Langerhans is an underrated SUPERSTAR

I was kind of joking about the east coast bias thing...

But I notice the Rangers-Padres game is going on right now, too, and isn’t on ESPN. At least that game involves a team in first place.

I'm so used to checking what's on other than local stuff and seeing Yanks or Sox

that I’m passed much reaction. I live in an area where a couple non-baseball stories are a topic of debate as to why ESPN devotes so much time to them. The answer that is given by radio people is that its ratings. The Yankees have the YES network and the Sox have something similar no? I’d assume that even with those big players siphoning off a huge portion of the audience, they still net high ratings, but I don’t know.

Kind of a slow night on the saber front

huh?

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

my analysis

David Wright needs to continue to go 0-forever so that way Pandoval takes the NL lead in BA. Maybe that will give him the recognition he deserves because he is AWESOME.

Sorry if that was too complicated, I’ll try to dumb it down later.

Pitch f/x study project for someone capable (I'm not)

Joe Morgan just said Mariano’s cut fastball is so effective because it moves so much later than every other cutter in the league.

Shouldn’t Pitch f/x show us if that’s true?

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on Jun 28, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Pitch f/x assumes every pitch moves in a parabola, or second-degree polynomial function.

Trajectories like that can’t break later (at least if they’re breaking as much) and the laws of physics would support the same claim.

Graham had a great article a few months ago on Mariano’s cutter, showing that he can change the movement on it. It’s not one pitch, but a whole lot of variations on a pitch. Then Harry had to come point out that Yankee stadium pitch f/x has some issues, so it’s probably not quite as cool of a pitch, but still.

KRod v Mariano is rather remarkable

and Mariano comes away with his first career RBI

I must say

The Mets have found a way to make 1-5 series look like 0-100 . walk off error on a pop up? Johan getting annihilated? 4 hit and 1 run over 2 games? blowing 3 runs in the first on two plays that weren’t scored errors but really were?
