Dodgers at Cubs: BtB Inaugural Game Thread
Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs, May 31, 2009 8:05 PM EDT
I have no idea where this experiment will take us, but at least I won't have to read the phrase "OMG WINZ!!!". Of course, writing that pretty much guarantees I'll now read "OMG WINZ!!!" at least seven times. Oooh, let's try out some of those nifty SBN widgets. Tonight's starting pitchers are:
Ok, so I did a bit of editing there.
If there's any doubt as to what's appropriate at BtB (and it's different from other SBN blogs), take another gander at our Community Guidelines. Ignorance is not an excuse. </after_school_special>

They quoted OPS and ERA way too much. But yeah, I really enjoyed reading their stuff. They had a couple of articles, like the “Superbike” one, that actually made me crack up laughing.

I have an OT question for you
You’re a HS coach right? Do you use Sabermetric principles to make decisions with your team?
St. Louis Cardinals... defying win expectancy since 2008
by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
At times,
but a problem with some of the saber principles and high school baseball is the environment. Bunts can change a game if you get a kid on the mound that can’t move, stolen bases are a lot easier to come by (less risk), and the hitters go from good to crap in a heartbeat.
All in all, a reason why I follow saber stuff is to see conventional wisdom questioned.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And like I mentioned in the momentum thread,
I think a lot of “conventional wisdom” is stuff that all of our dads learned when they played BabeRuth/ Legion ball.
Statistics were never questioned because who was going to run a database with 50 years worth of data by hand?
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sticking with the HS theme real quick,
I do laugh a lot when I see coaches give away outs in 5 of 7 innings, whether it is through bunts, caught stealing, failed hit and runs and everything else.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Last HS thing I'll mention,
Situation: Runner on 1st, 0 outs.
Sac bunt runner to 2nd. 1 out.
Sac bunt runner to 3rd. 2 outs.
Wild pitch scored the runner. We were down 1 and the catcher we were facing couldn’t block a beach ball. That’s the type of situation that can throw a kink in saber stuff at the HS level.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

Like you mentioned with the bunt-bunt-passed ball thing...
the frequency of various events are extremely different at the high school level. Many of the hard conclusions of sabermetrics don’t hold, but the process is still valid. You just need to change the inputs.
My guess is that there are a lot more walks, errors, SB, and WP/PB in high school. Yes? No?
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
by Sky Kalkman on May 31, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Walks are similar for the most part.
The last two years we averaged a little over 1 error a game. But we also had 5 games with zero errors. Stolen base success rate is very high if the kids are taught (or told) to go on a pitcher’s rhythm. WP/ PB is much higher.
No doubt that you could use the process to help, but the variables are so extreme. Some teams are good and some teams are really, really bad. Just throws things out of whack. Not to mention, we don’t have access to stats for other teams.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You could probably use something like Tango's Markov chain run matrix generator
imputing the highschool run environment and the frequency of the events. That would give you a rough approximation of how much each event is worth on average. I believe maxpreps tracks most of the stats, so it wouldn’t be that hard to do.
Here is the link to the markov chain
St. Louis Cardinals... defying win expectancy since 2008
by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I've looked at that.
Maxpreps seems to be updated right at the end of the season. Coaches don’t want that information out during the season. The secrecy is kind of ridiculous considering we all have the same lineup for the most part.
1-5/6 are pretty good hitters, the rest we just hope it gets put in play.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

Yeah, it was kind of funny when they'd rail on people for being short-sighted while using VORP.

Which is slightly less bad

not really
I actually thought they were a bit mean-spirited most of the time, and that kind of thing rarely helps dialog.
Sometimes, I enjoyed them—they eviscerated a Cincinnati columnist who really deserved it not long before they closed up shop. But I didn’t enjoy reading them regularly

The whole hating “traditionalism” thing has gotten old and has probably hindered the popularity of stats, but if anyone’s going to do it, I wanted those guys to do it.

So who's still around?
My girlfriend got back from a weekend away and we spend a while cooking dinner (salad, pork tenderloin, and roasted cauliflower with parm and truffle oil) and drinking wine, but I’m back and hopefully will be watching the rest of the game.

I hate cauliflower.
Mix is with basting oil, roast in 500 degree oven until tips are dry and crispy and the rest is soft, then drizzle with parm and truffle oil. Very sweet and tasty.

My interest in the game just fell dropped by 50%. Doesn’t help that my wife is recording Breaking Bad and HGTV’s $250k challenge at the same time right now, which leaves me without a tuner to watch the rest. ::sigh::
Back to trying to get my Reds spreadsheet going. Anyone know the average length of a starter outing?

Pulled it via fangraphs
In 2008, 4856 GS and 28198.7 IP. That’s 5.8 IP/gs. I was guessing 5.5, so this seems about right.
I just needed an estimate for how many innings to assign a game started when I don’t know how many innings a split-duty pitcher started vs relieved. This’ll do just fine.

no, it's 2009
And I could get it straight from fangraphs’ team pages. But this is just for my running glance at the Reds during the season, and doesn’t need to be perfect. Close enough is just fine. -j

Through yesterday
bUZR has them at -2.9 runs. But THT’s in-house stat (based on batted balls) has them at +9.6 runs. Might be a park effect or something. I’m averaging these for the power rankings and rating them at +3.4 runs. So, more or less average. Probably trending upward vs. earlier this week, though…

Fairly interesting discussion by the announcers about Manny.
Can he get some games in the minors (sort of a rehab stint) before his suspension is up. Joe Morgan is totally against it and I’m agreeing with him.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 11:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm against him on this one
And the argument that Major League Baseball is Minor League Baseball is very confusing to me.
by Dan Turkenkopf on May 31, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Just seems odd to me that the minors have had 50 game suspensions for awhile on PED suspensions, yet they would let a guy play that hadn’t served his 50 games.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You have to let them rehab
Otherwise long suspensions become longer. 50 games becomes 60 since you have to wait to get a guy in some minor league games.
by Harry Pavlidis on May 31, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rehab from what though?
Man, I just don’t see it. It’s not like he is sitting out 50 games because he is hurt. He can swing and do everything else right now.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
by Warden11 on May 31, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rehab may not be the right word
But they need to see live pitching/hitting before coming back, the point is the suspension should not have a de facto 10 days tacked on.
As far as minor league suspensions, I have two thoughts there. One, send them to instructional league (we get into a never ending question here, see thought #2). Two, fuggataboutit. Minors ain’t Majors, but let hem operate on the same principals. Whatever the setting, the player should be allowed to be game ready when the suspension ends. IMO.

that gets banged for PED’s, does he get to go to A to rehab?

With the Dodgers jumping out to the big early lead, so there wasn’t a lot of game action to focus the conversation.
