On this note, I'd like to say
I’m quite surprised to see Lou Brock so low on the career WAR list. Have I missed something, or is he only considered great by traditionalists who love stolen bases?
serious mostly.
certainly wasn’t aimed at chuck, though. brock played very well in 21 games in the postseason, all world series then. i think he OPSed close to 1.100 and stole bases at a high clip. i know voters love postseason performance and it certainly is an important aspect to consider, though 21 games is still pretty small no matter how important the games are. just pointing it out because these WAR things don’t take into account postseason games.
I never paid much attention to Brock's case until I joined Baseball Fever.
And then I pretty quickly saw a fairly universal statement that he was borderline at best and a pretty notable mistake at worst, with most people seeming to lean towards the latter.
Though I personally don’t have a problem with putting the stolen base champ in.
So this is basically "He didn't deserve it" post?
He probably didn’t, but still people, it can’t be changed without radical action. Let it go.
He's the second worst HOFer on the top 300.
If it went back further, then he likely wouldn’t crack the top 10-20 worst selection. It’s just another example that people can cling to showing how the “old gaurd” is wrong. We get it they made a bad decision. Let’s move on.
I think we're over the straight "Rice didn't deserve it" posts.
This is more of a “How does Rice stack up with someone he’s often compared to” post. Heck, one could conclude that Dawson deserves to make it in.
And, honestly, I think it’s best to take the view that these tend to be FYI posts. Here’s the info, make your own conclusions.
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
i've often wondered what the standard would be for the HOF if you just asked your average (knowledgeable) baseball fan what they thought it should be.
i’m not sure how such a survey could be conducted without falling into the old “3000 hits, 300 wins” etc. thing. i’m sure, though, that some enterprising survey constucter person (yes, i’m sure that’s the title) could come up with questions that could get at, in an indirect way, how many wins a player would have to be worth to be considered HOF worthy etc. wonder if it would match up or be higher or lower.
Good idea. My brothers' an SCP.

Dawson's late career consistency is pretty incredible.
