Girardi reveals Matsui plan
Joe Girardi says that Hideki Matsui will not play the outfield until June this season, according to the Associated Press.
"The earliest we would need him in the outfield would be interleague, and that's a ways off," Girardi said Wednesday. "That's why we envision him as our everyday DH. We need him. He's a great RBI guy. He's very important to our lineup."I can't totally agree with Girardi's first point. This means that we cannot give other players "half-days off." For example, we will probably need to give guys like Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon days off in the field, but we won't be able to DH them because of Matsui.
Matsui's legs are a major concern for me and I think it should be for the Yankees too. He is normally a good offensive weapon, but he is becoming a liability on defense.
His contract expires after this season, and I don't see the need to re-sign him. The Yankees have too many outfielders as it is, and there will be a huge market for outfielders for next season.

The only reason to resign him
Is if there’s substantial value in Japan to keeping him.

Agreed
Matsui is still very popular in Japan though, second most popular of the players in MLB. Just the fact that he played for Yomiuri (like the Yankees and Red Sox combined in Japan) helps him a ton.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

I'm sure this has been beaten to death elsewhere, but...
Who’s going to take the other OF spot and DH next year with Damon and Nady gone? Posada may need to DH, I suppose.

I'm guessing they may try to ride Posada at C until Montero is ready in 2-3 years
I’m also guessing that Posada won’t be able to handle it physically and will have to DH.
I think Josh Bard would have been a good signing for them.

The OF could (shocker) be above average with Damon/Gardner/Swisher

It's not like Matsui is going to start everyday
you can still give Posada and Damon days off from the field.

My only thought about this is why would you want Damon hitting if he's not playing the field?

So that Girardi has an excuse not to play Nick Swisher

Sounds like we have the makings of a "top ten excuses not to play nick swisher" list.
