Graph of the Day: Rice vs. Raines
WAR data from Sean's historical WAR database. It's awesome. Each players' seasons sorted from best to worst, left to right.

It does lower the bar quite a bit
or was the bar already that low?

HOF voters look at legacy more than actual level of play
So Rice was probably an exception.

Raines was an Expo, therefore never feared.

Andre Dawson begs to differ
he has received better Hall support than Raines, but then again he was a Cub for a while. However, the Hawk’s best seasons were in Montreal.

And yes, I realize this Rice vs. Raines graph is beating a near-dead horse.

That means the horse is still breathing.
Smother it, end its misery.

Maybe a compromise could be reached...
Rice gets to go into the Hall, but Grace gets to give the acceptance speech.

That would be most excellent.
I’d give 3-1 Grace would sneak a slumpbuster reference into that speech.

I'd love to see Rains vs. Rickey
I suspect Raines didn’t get more support partly because he was on the same ballot as Rickey, who was a similar type of player (with more flash). Raines clearly deserves to be voted in though.

Rickey had two 10+ seasons
and fourteen 4+ seasons

I have a GotD showing Rickey has a good case for the Hall based on splitting his career up into two pieces.
I think Bill James first had that idea.

So Raine's 11th best season, measured by WAR
is on par with Rice’s 6th best season? Am I reading this right?

You, sir, are correct.
Raines averaged 1.4 more WAR over their best ten seasons. (Same for best 12.)
