Around SBN: Dan Marino Starting College For Developmentally Disabled

Rob Neyer's team, which has the lowest payroll, beats Steve Phillip's, which has the highest payroll, 4-1. Yeah, they should be playing 100 or 1000 game series on the computer, but the recaps would take forever...

Something is so perfect about this matchup -- a "stathead" versus a "real baseball man."

Kurkijan is merciless in his writeup:

"This isn't a fair fight. Steve Phillips, a former general manager of the New York Mets, a guy who built a real major league team for seven years, against Rob Neyer, a baseball writer, a stat guy. Baseball writers don't know anything about baseball; neither do stat guys. Ask any manager. Phillips had the highest payroll in the tournament, Neyer the lowest. This had sweep written all over it... A writer beat a former general manager. We might be on to something here."

while this is amusing,

are they only going to do simulations? seems rather pointless.

i was just wondering if they were going to revisit it and see how these teams were to actually perform over the season.

i haven’t followed this whole thing (and i couldn’t figure it out from looking into it for roughly seven seconds) what the basis for the simulation was. while simulations are, as i said, amusing, i’d rather see the reality, imperfect as it may be.

Steve Phillips rivals possibly every other terrible GM in the 3 major sports

there is a reason why this guy doesn’t have a job anymore. Well, except for that whole broadcasting thing.

Neyer’s payroll: 38,600,505
Phillips’s payroll: 39,597,470

A’s-Yankees this is not.
It’s just smart vs. stupid.

you mean highlighting a 2% difference in payroll in your lead isn't really telling anyone anything meaningful?

and here i thought i was on a blog where people made fun of such things when those silly mainstream media types did such things.

what is even less meaningful....

They simulated a best-of-seven series. Not 1000 games, or 162 games, or even 100 games. Best of seven. Though that does always tell us which team is the best….

Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
