Graph of the Day: Barry Bonds' Historical RAR
138 RAR in 2002. Gross.
WAR data from Fangraphs. All data relative to average, except RAR. Rep is the RAR of a replacement-level player in the same number of plate appearances.

What I like about this, is that Bonds’ fielding data isn’t as terrible as many made it out to be. I always felt that towards the end of his career, with his knee problems, people unfairly slammed him for being “immobile” in LF. He clearly wasn’t a strong defender, but he was still out-fielding slugs like Pat Burrell and Carlos Lee.
Slugs? gee whiz xanthan, that’s pretty harsh. I woulda just called them lugs or something ;-)
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.
That's just sick.
A 13 win player is incredible. It’s going to be sad when we have to go through the HOF conversation about Bonds. The guy may be an ass and a cheater but he was an incredible player.
love the graph of the day. keep them coming.

Much thanks.
And, as I’ll probably mention every other day, ideas are appreciated. I’m ahead by about 7 days right now, but I could see the challenge increasing.

What's sad about this graph:
It would probably take 5-6 (!) Giants position players this year to reach 138 RAR.

giants a contender if bonds on the team?
semi-serious question – i realize he hasn’t played in a year and is old and has that whole federal trial thing. but he had pretty nice projections for last season and that division (certainly without manny) appears tight enough that a few breaks here or there and a big producer like a bonds could swing things.

At this point probably not. Even looking at adding Manny Ramirez the Giants are only adding one or two wins over their current outfield. I don’t think that Bonds could add more than Ramirez given his time off.
