The Royals settled with new first baseman Mike Jacobs, a slugger acquired from Florida, on a one-year, $3.25-million deal. He will receive $25,000 if he makes the all-star team.

(sigh)
Didn’t have the guts to post this on RR.
Let’s generously say Jacobs is a +6 hitter. We’ll play it conservative, and go with CHONE that he’s virtually Keith Hernandez out there, a -8 defender. -12.5 for first base, +20 for replacement level, and we get a 0.55 WAR player. Heck, let’s call it 0.6 because he hits so many homers and they are the best thing ever. And let’s also say it’s $5M per WAR.
That implies about $3M. So this isn’t a too far off for the Royals. Good thing this isn’t his first year of arb, which would mean we’d expect him to get 40% of his value, or around $1.2M, or less than Russ Branyan is going to get paid.
The Bravest Way to Construct a 78 win team.
Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.
Well
this is the same team that gave 9 million to Farnsworth, so value isn’t really there thing.
