A generalization: most of the statistic oriented posters who dominate the two main Brewers discussion forums dislike Hardy and don’t consider him very good.

????

Clarify please. Who doesn’t like Hardy? I for one think he and Braun are on a similar level. Do you want us to never acknowledge the possibility of trading him? I know you said generalization, but does just not being true make something a generalization?

I don't know who you're talking about.

But anybody who doesn’t think that Hardy isn’t good based on statistics is looking at the wrong metrics (do they still use VORP or something?)

Wait

is this because battlekow wanted to trade Hardy for A.J. Burnett? That was a long time ago.

I really have no idea what you mean by this. I assume you’re referencing BCB as one of those main discussion forums.

Wait wait wait

Are you trying to tell me that no field, slugging 1B are overrated? That doesn’t fit into my preconceived notions.

Prince Fielder WARs in the mid-2s and gets hailed as a great young slugger

Alex Gordon WARs in the mid-2s and is a “disappointment.”

I think the flaws in zone based ratings are amplified at 1st base. Prince obviously brings a lot of offense and I think descriptions of his defense are overstated.

But setting aside dollars and agents and assuming both will leave when eligible for FA, which would you prefer for the Royals?

by ol Pete on Feb 17, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

well, despite the Royals being dangerously think at 1B/DH

I think they’re about the same. Prince is obviously the superior hitter going forward, so I’d lean his directiion, but he is hitting in the NL, and really has defensive problems… those guys are easier to replace. Gordon I think will improve his hitting, but probably won’t reach Fielder’s level. ON the other hand, i think he can stick as at least as close to average 3B, and if that doesn’t work could move to the OF.

It’s a close one… CHONE has then about exactly the same once you figure in defense as I do. My guy says “FIelder,” but my head says “Gordon”

fair enough

like I say, I don’t think his defense is “no field” as he has been described. Probably in about 2 or so years he’ll be hitting in the AL.

He's a "disappointment"

To those people who think/thought he woulda been George Brett right from the get-go. I’d still take the guy though…. he is only 25 and steadily (if slowly) improving…
