BoaB: Mark Ellis Division Discussion and Taunting

This thread is for discussion about the Mark Ellis Division Ball on a Budget draft.  It's open to anybody, not just the people in the league.  Trash talking and and mockery is encouraged.  Anybody want to place bets on the order of finish?

Questions

I already discussed these with Sky, but it’s good to keep everyone updated:

How much money should we account for if the player is on a minor league contract (and Cot’s has no info)

Example:
Jeff Clement c
2008
    * 1 year (2008)
    * 1 year (2007)
o contract purchased by Seattle 9/4/07
    * signed 7/05
    * drafted 2005 (1-3) (USC)
    * $3.4M signing bonus
    * agent: Casey Close, Brodie Van Wagenen
    * ML service: 0.150

How do you want to bonus divided up and such as well?

“The minimum salary is the MLB minimum, so $400K. Cots does a pretty good job of listing when signing bonuses are paid, but if it’s not listed, assume equal distribution over all non-option
years.”

Just to be clear, Clement’s bonus would be 1.13 AAV then?

“Ehh, yeah, there’s probably an exception for draftee signing bonuses.
I’m pretty sure prospects all get it up front, so it wouldn’t count
when they’re called up. I was addressing a FA signing bonus.”

So, draft picks get no bonus allotment, and others are equally divided unless otherwise noted by Cots.

Actually, Cots seems pretty good about noting payouts over multiple years

I’ve seen many bonuses where Cot’s has noted a payout over 4-5 years. In the case of Clement above, I’d interpret as a $3.4M paid when he signed in 2005. Hence, I’d peg Clement at $400K for our purposes.

it's a tough decision

I’ll be up all night sweating it out…

oh no, I forgot Jose Guillen! Dayton Moore gives a guy so many options with all of his well-thought out contracts. I just hope Kyle Farnsworth is around by the 3rd round. It’s going to be the Bravest Way to Conduct a WAR draft from me.

I believe the way it works is that at 1, the next person can go.

But DF can make up his pick at any point during the draft.

How are we working OFers?

Since we’re using WAR and there are positional adjustments involved in figuring that, do we need to draft one LF, CF, and RF or are we doing the more standard fantasy thing and just drafting 3 OFers from anywhere?

There's a pos adjustment.

If a guy plays CF, you can expect him to rate about 10 runs worse in UZR, but he’ll also get 10 runs more for a pos adjustment, so it all comes out in the wash where an OF ends up playing. The only thing is that you can show off really good fielders more in CF and hide crappy outfielders more in LF or RF.

We almost finished round 1, dang it. Though I hope people don’t automatically stop drafting after 9 PM EST. It was my understanding was that if it was your turn, you could make a pick at any time

While the 4-hour clock pauses between 9 pm and 9 am, picks can still be made if the person up chooses to make his pick then. And then the next person could make his pick. Theoretically a bunch of picks could be made in the “off hours”. They just don’t have to be made then because the clock has been paused.

Not necessarily

I think some of those picks were stretches. Some of them are cheap, high upside guys but you really don’t know if they are going to realize that potential in 2009. And I think some of the recent picks are guys I think are a bit overrated by 2008 performance.

But if you’re looking closely at likely 2009 WAR and the dollars they make and trying to strike the right balance, you aren’t going to go far wrong. (ok, so I’m stating the obvious).

Time Limits and other rules

Let’s move all discussion of the draft time limits and any other rules into this discussion thread.

For the record, here’s my view of things:

1. The initial rules did not specify anything regarding weekend time limits, nor did they make an exception from the 4 hour limit over the weekends.

2. We had a bunch of discussion about reducing the time limit to 2 hours. Did people miss this discussion, because I didn’t hear any objections until now.

In any case, I think R.J. has it right. We should have a majority, and then he will send an email making anything official. The problem is that #1 above is really a rule clarification rather than a change, IMO.

My “votes” are for:

1. A 4 hour time limit from 9-9 on the weekends.
2. Reduce the time limit down to 2 hours on weekdays.

by Adam Peterson on Feb 22, 2009 7:23 AM EST reply actions

My votes

1. Yes, 4 four limit on weekends
2. Yes, reduce time limit to 2 hrs. on weekdays

Also, I like the idea of having a majority opinion about changes and then emailing everyone about the decision. It sounds fair to me.

i can't speak for everyone else

but i don’t find it too difficult to check here and there and see what’s going on and just flow with it. i understand some of the complaints, but i don’t get some of the anger.

it’s also not that hard to come up with a list of a few players you like and email them to someone. i mean, if you are a normal reader of this site and others like it, you should already sort of know who is who on a ball diamond and have things at least somewhat narrowed down to who you want as each round comes up.

2 hours is plenty of time during the week. 4 hours on the weekend sounds right, b/c people do have families and lives.

I’d be for a later start time on Sunday’s b/c I do go to church and don’t usually get home until 1, but i can email my preferences to TucsonRoyal, it’s not a big deal.

You're right...things have been getting blown out of proportions. I don't get the frustration with what's been going on either.

All things considered, this draft has gone really smoothly. You’re bound to hit these communication problems when you’re dealing with 12 different people with 12 different lives that are trying to coordinate a draft over the course of multiple weeks. Everyone’s been really relaxed and it’s been a lot of fun up until this point, so we’ll get beyond it.

its just a difficult thing to balance as this is a fun thing for everyone, but we have to have some structure to make this work.

i think with any rule change (like the time limit), there needed to be some buffer time to make sure everyone was on board. some people are on this much more than others, because thats just the way it works. so logically, some people will hear this earlier. when we make rule changes, i think we need to gear them more toward making sure everyone knows and maybe sacrificing some efficiency, rather than the other way around.

Elijah Dukes

I agonized over this one. On the one hand, he managed 2.9 WAR last year with only 334 PA. Even with a dropoff from his .382 wOBA last year, as long as he has at least 500 PA, I think he easily passes 3 WAR, with a possibility of 4 or more if he plays the full season.

That’s why I agonized over him. Who knows whether his off-field struggles will strike again…

ouch

that could really suck. everyone would have what, 50 hours? or it would have been 100 hours when we started? from 9a-9p even 7 days a week, that’s 4+ days that we could wait for a first round pick. sure you can skip that person every time after that but that could lead to some painful waiting during the draft.

by jfranco77 on Feb 23, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, you could have a per-pick limit, too.

But this way you can insta-skip people who consistently use up their 2 or 4-hour window.

And I have no idea where everyone is. Basically everyone has been skipped today and has made up their picks later, although I don’t think someguy has made up his 2 snake picks yet.

I didn’t see your pick of Brandon Phillips on the blackberry, so I wasn’t even aware of being on the clock. Not that it would have mattered, I ended up picking late last night from a labor & delivery room as my wife went in 10 weeks early, but it’s under control at the moment. do you think we should have a googledocs spreadsheet?

i think it would help everyone… i was thinking this:

cover page for the draft (12×25 matrix with labels and the suchs)
then each team have its own page with the roster and salaries. i’d set up a formula to show money left and stuff.

i think that would save everyone a lot of time. cuz ive been making like a draft board to see whos been taking, and im sure everyone else has been too. it would also make the draft more strategic, like you can see who has money left and what positions arent filled…

thoughts?

well i got it up... hopefully people will use it.

if you guys on the discussion board can take a look, and see if people would be willing to do this, thatd be great. i think this could be nice.

as for requirements, we could make it so you had to update the big board, your pick and pick’s salary, and number of picks left. i have all the formulas set up so the salaries would take care of itself. so yea.

I'll use it

I’ve been using my own excel spreadsheet to do the same for my team. I will update my sheet tonight for you guys.

Great

Thanks for doing this. I’m tracking everyone on my own spreadsheet, but am happy to add my picks as they’re made. I also added a couple formatting changes and fixed the players remaining cell.

Snakes

Did we resolve the 2 hour snake time limit proposal that was on the table yesterday?

I think devil_fingers and someguy had reservations, but neither was adamantly against.

In any case, we shouldn’t enforce a 2 hour snake limit until we have a clear consensus and R.J. emails the league.

new draft thread

i think the suggestion for making a new thread is a good one. the old one does take FOREVER to load.

Yeah, I agree

I propose that after we finish this round, we open a new thread for picks 11-20.

Can't we just announce it here, and start immediately

it might seriously inhibit my abiilty to (snake) draft in a timely manner, especially if I have to go to the old thread for my first pick, then the new one for my second. We aren’t especially close to me yet, but if it gets to be time, then I could end up on the train when that happens, and unable to do anything about it (unless I can BlackBerry email Jeff again).

I’m assuming he sent his picks to TusconRoyals, but I guess we’ll see. I guess he has 4 hours to get before we can skip him (the rule hasn’t been changed offically yet, right?).

Beckett

What does everyone think? Obviously he’s always going to be a health risk but he was a 5-WAR player last year in 174 innings and he has the potential to be better than he was last year. I’m not sure if he was a good splurge at this point or not.

A good risk at this point

He might not have been a good risk early on, but at this point of the draft, you need to look for some upside.

by Adam Peterson on Feb 26, 2009 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I'd say he's a good pick this late in the draft

It’s getting to the point where you have to figure out who to splurge on and take a bit of risk with. The 10 million hurts, but considering his upside and his value from last year, I think he’s a good pick.

Also, he may be an injury risk, but he’s still pitched more than 170 innings each of the last 4 years. Not too shabby.

Correct.

The only thing worth thinking about is if some sort of incentive is guaranteed to be triggered. That would be a dumb way to write a contract, but something like that might exist.

Rules Question

Can a player play CI or MI if he has 20+ games at CI or MI but it’s a combination of less than 20 games (each) at 1B/3B or 2B/SS. FOr example, a player wouldn’t qualify at 3B or 1B if he had 14 games at 3B and 15 at 1B. But that wouold be 29 games at CI… could he play CI?

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.

by Matt Klaassen on Mar 1, 2009 5:23 PM EST reply actions

I would imagine that a player that has 20+ games at 3B is capable of playing 1B and would be eligible, even if he played fewer than 20 games at 1B.

Same deal with a middle infielder that’s played 20 or more at SS but fewer than 20 at 2B.

But that’s just my way of seeing it.

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 1, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

A player with 20+ games at 3B would be eligible at CI, but not at 1B. If that were the case, Sky would have set up the roster simply with three CI rather than a 1B, 3B and CI.

by Adam Peterson on Mar 1, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I've been going by the rules as written by Sky (along with the clarifications he's made subsequently)

And he listed the various positions individually, along with an eligibility rule. So if you played 140 games at 3B and 19 games at 1B, then you aren’t eligible for 1B.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Mar 1, 2009 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Most places I've seen

would require 20+ games at a position to qualify, and then once he qualifies at a position, he qualifies for CI or MI.

For the 1B/3B scenario you describe, I suppose it would depend on whether he qualifies at another position.

by Matt Klaassen on Mar 2, 2009 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

Right. Traditional fantasy baseball requires at least 20 games at either 3B or 1B to count as a CI.

15 each at 3B and 1B doesn’t cut it. We’re all about tradition here at BtB so we’ll stick with that assumption.
