I not that bad, well maybe.

Go ahead and begin, but Markis is not actually on the clock until Tuesday morning at 9am EST. Also, for a comment on a pick, put up the comment like:
Round X Pick X Name Team Position Salary
e.g.
Round 1 Pick 1 Jose Guillen Royals OF 12 million

Lets say once we get within ~15 million left, some should verify salary after each pick. I will after a round or two, set up a Google spreadsheet showing the picks, unless someone does it before it

So, officially, as of 9:00 am, EST, TusconRoyal (Jeff) is on the clock, right?

And then has until 1:00 am, EST to make his pick, right?

Also, here is a link to the web spread sheets. I have the day off today, so I might be able to keep up better today, but in the future, I will try to update at least once a day.

Round 1 Pick 10 B.J. Upton TB Rays OF $0.45331M

This represents a 10% raise for this pre-arbitration player, which I believe is how we decided to handle the salaries of such players who have not yet signed their 2009 contract.

I'm a fan of being auto-skipped if one has any outstanding picks.

At the very least I don’t think the swing picks should get 4 more hours if they haven’t made a pick yet.

by philkid3 on Feb 17, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

I think everyone should get 4 hours for each pick

I don’t think the guys at the ends should be punished for being at the ends. If an end guy makes a mistake and misses his 4-hour window, he shouldn’t be doubly punished by getting double skipped.

It's my opinion that 4 hours for each pick is fair

I see it the same way as NYRoyal. It so happens that I didn’t get totally screwed because of it, but it’s like getting skipped for two picks in my case.

4 Hours or bust.

Pretty much agree with NY Royal.

If this really starts to drag, we should consider bumping it down to 3 hours to see if it speeds things up. But when the draft’s moving, you don’t notice the 4 hour windows so much. But going from 4 to 2 right now seems unnecessary at this point.

Just a reminder: we don't need to stop after 9:00 pm

I know some of us just won’t be able to make picks after 9 pm and before 9 am. But I don’t want anyone to think that the draft is supposed to stop during that 12-hour period. It can go on as long as people are willing to make picks. The 4-hour clock pauses, so no one is forced to make picks, but it would sure be nice if people would continue making picks at night if they have the opportunity to do so. The other division has gotten through most of a round this evening, while we’ve largely been on pause. It would be great if we could make more evening/night picks and keep this draft from going three weeks or more.

[BTW, this isn’t a complaint about the guy who is currently up, vivapujols, or anyone else. We all have schedules and things to do. It’s just an open plea to my division to consider more nighttime picks.]

Very true

But if Gordon had fallen to me this round, I think he would have been a good value pick, even without my fanboy bias. So far I’ve managed to avoid my desire to draft Greinke. I’m pretty sure someone will end up taking Soria before me too. But Guillen’s going to be all mine.

I fear this is how this is the draft is going to be on weekends.

But the clock doesn’t stop. People will continue to be skipped as they miss their windows. But this is really slowing things down. I think averaging one round a day is now a pipe dream. I appreciate high risk, high reward moves

As I’ve said elsewhere in these BoaB threads. I can’t argue against it. If you’re willing to take the risk, it’s the kind of thing that can win you the championship. I’m just too risk averse in these drafts to make that kind of jump. And, having never done any WAR & salary based draft before, I have no idea how this will pan out. Will having a lot of money left be really useful in the middle rounds? Or will there just be mediocre talent left then which can be had for little money? I really don’t know.

It's a 25 man roster

So I assume that they are. Yep:

25-man rosters consisting of 13 offensive players (2 CA, 1B, 3B, 1B/3B, 2B, SS, 2B/SS, 4 OF, and a UT), six starters, and six relievers. LF/CF/RF are NOT separate positions.

It's semantics on "beches"

There are no reserves/benches like in regular fantasy leagues. But with 13 offensive players, you can have some scrubs that don’t get a lot of PAs if you think you can hit 6500 PAs with fewer players who should play full time. Those scrubs would be your “bench players”.

That's his draft signing bonus

and although it’s not a typical contract for a draftee, I think you would need to include Wieters’ 6MM and Price’s 10MM bonuses if you include Pelfrey’s 3.5.

King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president

by Sam Page on Feb 23, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, this is a bit different

This was his draft signing bonus, but it was also the signing bonus for a multi-year major league contract.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Feb 23, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

So what's the verdict?

Because I don’t think Pelfrey should be singled out for that one, given it’s a draft signing bonus just like the others.

by Marc Normandin on Feb 23, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

Mostly meaning

I don’t mind paying, but that means everyone else has to pay too :-)

by Marc Normandin on Feb 23, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the question is how we handle hybrid cases like Pelfrey’s. We have one rule which says that MLB contract bonuses are counted on a prorated basis. We have another rule which says that draft signing bonuses aren’t counted. In this case, Pelfrey’s bonus covers both rules. And I believe this is the first player we have drafted who has such a bonus (both draft signing bonus and MLB contract bonus).

If I understand the power structure correctly, Sky hands down the verdicts.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Feb 23, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

In my mind, his signing bonus is a draftee signing bonus, not part of a free agent contract.

It’s a hazy situation, for sure. If you’re giving me the choice, the Pelfrey bonus doesn’t count. But it might be best to discuss it as a draft group.

Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.

by Sky Kalkman on Feb 24, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

Free agency is irrelevant

(and this is going by what has been discussed and agreed to in prior threads, like the first BoaB thread). It was decided that contract signing bonuses would be counted on a prorated basis. And this wasn’t just for FA contracts. No one ever said anything about FA’s. It covers long-term deal for a team’s current player, such as Youkilis’s contract, which inludes a $1M signing bonus.

But it is definitely a hazy situation. I think we’ve discussed it. If you want to say that any bonus a draftee gets, regardless of contract, is excluded from 2009 salary for this draft, I’m cool with it.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Feb 24, 2009 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

That hasn't really sped them up much

I believe they are in the same round we are. Unfortunately, the only thing that will really speed up the draft is people making picks more quickly. And people can only do what they can do based on their schedules and degree of interest in keeping on top of this.

Speaking only for myself, it's not an issue of interest having waned at all.

I spent a huge portion of last week recording an album and most of the weekend doing layout and cover art. My internet was also pretty flaky all weekend, but it’s fixed now and things are back to normal for me.

by Aaron Campeau on Feb 24, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Same

Speed isn’t the issue but ease of tracking this one is. My access during the day is quite limited….its unfortunate we couldn’t set this up in couchmanagers.com which emails you when your pick is up and you can customize the rosters to our needs. This late into the game, we’d all have to take turns doing our picks.

If it went to 2 hrs, I’d easily lose interest because I’d get my picks skipped too often

by Jason Collette on Feb 24, 2009 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

I really think that's a smart move.

It takes a minute to make a pick. But with the system we have set up, it’s being aware that you’re up that’s the hard part.

by Matthew Artus on Feb 24, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

I suggested this before

But we all have exchange e-mails. We can either do it here, or have TucsonRoyal send our e-mail addresses out to each other.

So does this mean that TucsonRoyal is on the clock for his 9th round pick?

I think that’s right, but things got a little confused.

So Matthew A is only the clock

and Tuscon is eligible to pick whenever. right?

Wait, M&W made is picks at 8:52 pm EST

And those were the last pick of the 8th round and the first pick of the 9th round, right? So then Tucson is up next and he’s on the clock until 12:52 pm Wednesday, right?

M&W and I made our picks too early

If philkid3 wants any of the picks, he should be able to take them. We need to check on the time with the time on the comments. I say philkids3 decides if he wants any of our picks and either me or M&W will make another pick. If it is mine, I am not interest in M&w picks. Any problem with that?

Clearing up the the recent draft shenanigans...

We goofed up the pick # a few rounds ago, and I think it has us messed up a bit. Here’s a cleaned up list of the recent draft picks, starting from where we screwed up the pick #:

MatthewA: Round 8 Pick 93 Mike Napoli LAA C $2 Million

***Here is where things get screwy. philkid3’s pick was skipped here. If philkid3 sticks with Scherzer as his pick here, the draft goes:

philkid3: Round 8, Pick 94 Max Scherzer, SP, Arizona (4.3 Million)
Tuscon: Round 8 Pick 95 Paul Maholm SP Pirates 3.5M

Tuscon: Round 9 Pick 98 Andy Pettite P Yankees 5.5M

…and philkid3 is on the clock. If philkid3 has any objections, please speak now. Otherwise, he’s on the clock now and let’s just pretend this never happened.

by Matthew Artus on Feb 24, 2009 11:53 PM EST reply actions

So, if we're back on track...

Phil is OTC until 1:00 pm, EST Wednesday. And everyone has made up their makeup picks.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Feb 24, 2009 11:54 PM EST reply actions

Exactly.

As long as philkid3 expresses no objections to being skipped, we’re right on schedule.

by Matthew Artus on Feb 24, 2009 11:55 PM EST up reply actions

No worries.

Just need to be a bit more careful about making picks.

We each need to:
A) stay on top of the current pick and remember loudly any picks skipped, and
B) try to make picks using Tuscon’s format:

Round X Pick X Name Team Position Salary

Do that and we can hopefully avoid these snafus.

by Matthew Artus on Feb 25, 2009 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

And I think the e-mail notification rule should be used too

A little ways up we talked about sending out an e-mail to the next guy after every pick. So it would be great if everyone could get into the habit of making their pick and then immediately e-mailing the next guy in the draft order. Some of us have already posted out e-mail addresses above. It would be great if everyone could do that. That kind of notice might make picks come more quickly.

by Scott McKinney on Feb 25, 2009 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

My opinion

If somebody jumps over you and pick out of turn, you have the option of taking the player the drafted and then the skipper has to re-draft, which is what we did here. If you don’t want the player the skipper took, then no harm done.

Isn't Peavy due to make $11 Million this year?

I believe his 2007 Cy Young Award triggered a clause in his contract that ups his 2009 salary to $11 million.

And yeah – was definitely considering Peavy here, too.

by Matthew Artus on Feb 25, 2009 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, Peavy = $11M
4 years/$14.5M (2005-08), plus 2009 club option
signed extension with San Diego 2/05 (avoided arbitration)
05:$0.75M, 06:$2.5M, 07:$4.75M, 08:$6M, 09:$8M club option ($0.5M buyout)
full no-trade clause 2008-09
2008 salary increases to $6.5M with 600 IP 2005-07
2009 salary increases to $9M with 600 IP in 2006-08, with 200 IP in 2008
2009 salary increases by $0.5M with each top 3 finish in Cy Young vote in 2006-08, with top salary of $11M
2009 salary increases to $11M with Cy Young during 2005-07

I completely misunderstood the wording.

I thought that meant if he won in 2009.

Can I drop him and re-pick like someone did with Kelly Johnson in the other draft?

Round 9 Pick 104 Manny Parra SP MIL 0.5 Million (?)

vivaelpujos can pick

Make sure you check the time your self. I am messed up in that the draft is in EST, I am in MST and BtB views for me in PST.

I thought about taking Broxton, but I’d be tempted to watch him and I seem to be his personal jinx. I’ve watched him throw about 6 innings, and he’s had about a 27 ERA in those six innings.

Round 10 Pick 116 "3B" Pablo Sandoval ~.400 Million

salary isn’t on Cot’s but it’s close to MLB minimum.

was wondering when he would go. Is he going to play 2B or SS this year?

I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.

by oldjacket on Feb 26, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

All signs point to SS.

I’m gambling on that not hurting his value too much as he’s a SS by trade, not a 2B.

by Matthew Artus on Feb 26, 2009 5:16 PM EST reply actions

Well he was terrible at second last year

so conventional wisdom means that he will be even worse at short. However, last year may have just been an adjustment period for him, and he may really be much better.

vivaelbeñsheets

by vivaelpujols on Feb 26, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty much banking on that adjustment.

But I don’t think his bad is so bad that it’ll kill me.
