BoaB: Mark Ellis Division Draft
This is the draft thread for the Mark Ellis Division draft. RJ is in charge, although you can mutiny if he starts cheating too blatantly. (No, RJ, you do NOT automatically get all the Rays' players.) The randomly chosen draft order is below, and it will go in reverse order during even numbered rounds. For discussion and trash talking please use the separate FanPost. Rules are laid out here.

DF can make his pick at any time between now and Tuesday at 1 PM
But the “clock” won’t begin until Tuesday at 9 AM no matter what.
To steal this from TR, make your picks in this format:
Round X Pick X Name Team Position Salary
e.g.
Round 1 Pick 1 Jose Guillen Royals OF 12 million
And yes, if DF makes his pick, then the next person can make theirs, and then the next person, ect.
Whoever is the next person up would then have until Tuesday at 1.

I'm inclined to say "too bad"
We all have access to Cot’s. It’s most likely that errors will be made regarding arbitration, as with Kelly Johnson. If someone thinks Pujols is a good deal because he’s $6M, I don’t see it as being any different from someone thinking Nick Punto is a great deal because he’s a 7 WAR shortstop. IMO.

But it’s the only way to get things done reasonably quickly. I’m really busy during the day with work and classes and such, but I’ll do the best I can. So no, I’m not opposed.

3.11 Kevin Youkilis 7MIL
Looks like 6MIL + 1MIL bonus
by Todd@mastersball on Feb 19, 2009 3:11 PM EST reply actions
Actually
By the rules Sky agreed to, unless specified on Cots, signing bonuses are divided equally among the guaranteed years of the contract. So it is only $6M + 0.25M = $6.25M.
The immoderate moderator
by Scott McKinney on Feb 19, 2009 3:29 PM EST up reply actions
I think it's the other way around
Cot’s notes when signing bonuses are spread over multiple years. We discussed elsewhere with Sky, I’ll let him clarify. I think Youk is a 7M player.
by Adam Peterson on Feb 19, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions
Ok, my understanding was otherwise
I thought Sky said that Cots is usually pretty good about saying which years signing bonuses get assigned to or how they are divided, but if it isn’t clear, then the bonus is divided evenly among the years of the contract. And draft signing bonuses aren’t counted at all. But yeah I would like for Sky to clear this up. I could be way off.
The immoderate moderator
by Scott McKinney on Feb 19, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions
Question: Does Cots ever list if the signing bonus for a free agent was paid fully in the first year?
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
I've never seen it.
I have seen bonuses called out when paid out over multiple years. See Carlos Beltran, Jim Thome, among others. Never seen Cot’s specifically note a bonus paid in a single installment.
That said, it appears that both drafts have pretty much prorated all bonuses over the length of the contract. May be difficult to go back and change a bunch of salaries right now…
by Adam Peterson on Feb 19, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions
I don't remember having seen Cots do that for anyone
So what’s your ruling on this issue, Sky?

Hate to be a dick, but I agreed to to a draft with a 4 hour time limit with no clock on weekends because I knew I could commit to that. I would not have agreed to participate with the present set-up, with rules changing on the fly. If anyone knows someone that wants to either pick up my team or cover for me over the weekend, please send them my way.
I’ll check in when I can, but my weekends from now until April are tied up, I will be without Internet access and the access I will have I need to focus on some other things.

rules cant keep being changed like this… without everyone (or at least most) agreeing on changes, and EVERYONE getting noticed and given proper time to prepare for such changes.
I agree
things haven’t affected me directly, and I don’t really follow much besides what players are getting picked and when I’m supposed to pick, but we should at least give people adequate notice if we are changing things from how things started out. Yeah, we all wan tto get down ASAP, but some people have more access than others on the weekends, etc.

I didn’t see that in the original rules. It just said the clock ran from 9-9. I don’t think it said M-F only. Perhaps this was a rule that was discussed and agreed upon later.

I don't believe it was an original rule, or at least I wasn't aware of it.

Though I do agree
that rule changes should be better managed in the future. The trick is if we want this draft to be finished anytime within the next millenium, how long are we going to dick around about rules and hold up the draft? At some point, you can’t get everyone’s input and just have to go forward with it. It’s a fine line.

Can't you just email Jeff with your picks?
It worked fine for me, and I learned my lesson after that Kelly Johnson incident. It’s a fantasy baseball league so there’s no reason to be anything other than laid-back about it, I just don’t remember any opposition when the time limit changed, or when we started picking on the clock on weekends.

7.5 Manny Parra, SP 400K
King of the bling come to lay down the evidence//Not George Bush, L-Millz be da president
For the record...
…not suggesting we go back to the originally agreed to 4 hour limit (it was conveyed to me when I agreed to participate there was no weekend clock). Just pointing out that some of us have have committed to something different than what is being done. In the laid back nature that we are supposed to be treating this (you know — like saying tough sh!t to someone who makes an honest mistake early in the draft and saying screw the 20 minutes someone should still have on the clock because it wouldn’t matter anyway), I’m okay with with this setup.
As for e-mailing my picks, I don’t have the time to even set up the lists. I could have sent a list Thursday to cover Friday and maybe monday, but I can’t send a list Thursday to cover Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon, sorry.

Salary
I have Phillips at 4.75 + 0.75 / 4 = 4.9375 (check my math…)
by Adam Peterson on Feb 24, 2009 1:08 AM EST up reply actions
that looks right to me
- 4 years/$27M (2008-11), plus 2012 club option
* re-signed by Cincinnati 2/15/08 (avoided arbitration, $4.2M-$2.7M)
* $0.75M signing bonus
* 08:$2.75M, 09:$4.75M, 10:$6.75M, 11:$11M, 12:$12M club option ($1M buyout)
Ahh, okay
I wasn’t sure what to do with signing bonuses. I figured if it wasn’t specified that it was spread out, it was paid as a lump sum in the front. But that works and I think he’s the only guy on my team that that’d be an issue with, but I’ll double check.

I think we're not including any performance, award or playing time incentives/bonuses
Because we don’t know if the player will actually get that bonus and we don’t want to come up with some kind of test for which bonuses are likely to be attained and which are not.
