Ball On A Budget League Announcements
UPDATE: Those names in bold are good to go, the rest need to shoot an email (or post in the comments) in order to confirm your interest.
The leagues are set. We were able to form two 12-team leagues, each holding a separate draft. RJ will coordinate the Mark Ellis Division and Jeff (TucsconRoyal) will coordinate the Pat Burrell Division. To confirm that you are participating, please email your coordinator by Saturday night (if you need to back out, let them know that, too.) If you are listed as a backup, please email me to let me know you're still interested if a spot opens up. I will post four FanPosts starting Monday, one for each league to make their picks and one for each league to talk trash. Draft order will be announced then. Rules can be found here.

Can't speak for Sky
But I will be talking plenty of trash about everyone (and likely their mothers) despite not being in this draft either.

player salary lists
Is there still a plan to put together an official salary list? or even an unofficial list? or anyone who wants to share the work in putting the data together?
I'm in R. J.

right... but...
there are a ton of guys who don’t have a 2009 contract listed yet.
the ESPN guys just used 2008 salary + 10% for those guys.
that works fine for about 80% of them (because they have less than 3 years of service) but there are probably a few guys who are in arbitration and cots doesn’t have their arbitration data listed).
for example, James Loney:
James Loney 1b
1 year/$0.411M (2008)
* 1 year/$0.411M (2008)
o re-signed by LA Dodgers 2/28/08
* 1 year (2007), re-signed 3/07
* 1 year (2006), re-signed 2/06
* contract purchased 11/05
* drafted 2002 (1-19)
* $1.5M signing bonus
* ML service: 2.012
____
I would just use 0.411mil * 1.10 = .4521mil and that would probably be OK. But there are probably other guys who will be at least a couple mil off.
Basically I think that we just need a rule that we definitively use whenever Cots doesn’t have 2009 data available.
2008 salary + 10% works for me
As long as we pick something and we’re consistent, it doesn’t matter very much on the lower end.
by Adam Peterson on Feb 15, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, that works fine for me.
I had no idea Cots was behind on some of the deals. My childhood is ruined now.

I thought we were doing the midway point of their submitted arbitration figures?
Via MLB.com? I personally don’t care, but want everyone on the same page.
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
works for me
so if they are available, and we know the player is in arbitration, then we’ll use the midpoint unless they settle by tomorrow.
and if the player isn’t known to be in arbitration we will just use 2008 plus 10%.
i like it!

Of Mild Concern...
Have we established when the clock is going to start on the draft?
I only ask because Monday is Presidents Day and the holiday might impede various folks’ ability to make picks, such as if anyone (like me) is traveling on Monday.
Of course, if it’s just me or the actual draft itself will start after Monday, then we’re all set.
I'm ok on Monday
Travel on Tuesday, hopefully my blackberry will be sufficient from the road…

I have confirmation from users cavegravedave, acblue, and mlbnotebook
Only one left is Dailyrotopickups. If he doesn’t respond by tomorrow afternoon, slowjo is in.
RJ and Jeff, start Tuesday because of the holiday or stick with Monday? Once we start, I’ll let you guys figure out if your leagues will continue over weekends.
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
I'm fine with either
but given a choice I’d rather start Monday. If someone has the holiday off, they may have more free time to focus on the draft. Me, I’m working that day but plan to follow along throughout.
When do we set the draft order?
by Adam Peterson on Feb 14, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions
I say start Monday, but no one will get punished in my league if they are late with their pick
I was thinking, if people in my group want, we could also send an email after each pick.
by Jeff Zimmerman on Feb 14, 2009 11:17 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not in your group
but that makes sense to me. I’m fine receiving emails after the picks, helps notify owners and keep things moving along. However, I understand if no one is able/willing to send the emails.

Oh man
Hope I’m not in over my head here. I am no WAR expert.
Hopefully I run into some luck, and grab a good pick in the draft. Pick 3 or 10 would be nice.

I have a rules question or two
I was going to put this in the original thread, but I fear the page has turned on that thread. My question is on position eligibility for SP/RP. By the rules we have set up, in order for the player to be eligible, he must have played that position for 20 games last year (in either the minors or majors). So this means 20 starts for SP, 20 relief appearances for RP and both for dual eligibility. So, for instance, Joba Chamberlain had 12 starts and 30 relief appearances, so he’s only eligible for RP. Am I interpreting the rule correctly?
My second question is about players who were injured in 2008 and failed to meet the 20 game eligibility for any position (obviously this will affect more pitchers, particularly SP’s, but could also affect some position players). Gallardo is such a player (only seven game appearances in 2008). If a player was injured and didn’t meet the 20-game threshold for any position, do you then look at his 2007 play to determine eligibility?
I know these are nitpicky things, but they are just details that I’d like to get cleared up, because they’ll come into play at some point.

Its all based on innings
IP limits of 1000 for starters and 500 for relievers
You can take as many P you want. Starting and Relief innings can’t exceed those totals and if they do the total gets adjusted down. They were discussed in the comment section that Sky links above in the main body.

Thanks
A couple more questions, and I’m sorry if I’m being dense here. These are 25-player teams. In scoring the league, are we going by the total WAR for every player on the team? This isn’t like a standard fantasy league in which there is a starting lineup and then “bench” players whose numbers don’t count when they aren’t in the “lineup” for the fantasy team. Correct? And there was some talk of stat corner’s SP vs. RP WAR. But we’re just going with Fangraphs version of Value Wins, correct?

Correct, everyone counts, although there's no benefit for going over the PA and IP limits.
And Fangraphs’ WAR.
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
Based on this response
We can take any pitcher and call him SP or RP, we just have to be careful with the inning ceilings. If I wanted to take Joba and call him a reliever, I could be in a tough spot if he pitches 200 innings out of the rotation all year. RP innings and WAR would probably be prorated downward.
