How much do you think Matt Holliday is worth?
Simple question but not so simple answer. In the four seasons where Matt Holliday has seen at least 600 plate appearances, he's been worth an average of $25.2 million. That's nothing to sneeze at. This isn't going to be a long post about it, just really a question about how much you think he's worth and two graphs to take a look at how much he has contributed over his career (since 2004).
So, how much is Matt Holliday worth![]()
? You're getting a premier hitter who plays very good defense in left field and runs fairly well.

Not as much as the Cardinals gave up to get him.
Id say he’s in the $12 million a year category, 3 years. Heck he is maybe even worth $15 million a year, but will he get that in the current economic environment?

Wow that seems low.
Very good hitter and a good fielder for a corner outfielder.

I didnt realize he is as young as he is
How is this guy only 29 years old?
But does anyone give him upwards of $15 million per year? The market has changed due to the economy.

The market has changed due to the economy
Did it really, though? CC got his money. Teix got his money. Burnett got his money. Holiday is the FA on the market this year. Someone’s gonna pay for him. As for the statement itself, the market for lesser players was definitely affected last year, but will it be this year? The top players didn’t seem to suffer much, though.

CC got his money. Teix got his money. Burnett got his money.
What do those three players have in common?
I gotta go 'cause I'm probably definitely gonna nod out again.

And Ollie Perez
got $15 million a year more than he deserved. And he’s only on a 3 year $36 million deal.

I still don't understand this logic
If trading for him got the leg up on signing him(and potentially Pujols if the rumors of him scoping the team’s future are true), or the draft picks, plus the production he has provided and will provide, I think he will end up being more than worth it.

sounds good
he could probably get that money if he went to a big market. I think the Cards could pay up though.

Since 2006, the only players to post 130 Total Runs in every season have been Matt Holliday, Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, Hanley Ramirez, and Ichiro. You have the best first baseman, best second baseman, best shortstop, best right fielder, and best left fielder in terms of all-around ability showing up on that list.

Over $20M a season, basically
5/100 would be a steal.

I don't like the idea of paying a 34 year old Holliday $20m
Seems like way too much.

It’s better than paying a 34-year old Vladimir Guerrero a sum of $15 million.

Doesn't matter if it's better
That doesn’t make it an intelligent move. 15 per over 3 would be ideal, maybe he sees value in an opportunity to cash in one more time, but he’ll probably be looking for a 5 or 6 year deal. Like the poster below me points out, I’d say Carlos Lee money is more likely, I wouldn’t do though.

I think he'll get Carlos Lee money
6 years, $100 M or so.
Is he worth it? He’s probably worth 25 wins or so over the next 6 years, maybe 22-23. He’s probably the top free agent on the market this offseason so demand for him will be relatively high. As a Cards’ fan, I’m not crazy about the idea that he’d be receiving $18-20 M (due to a backloaded contract) in his age 34 and 35 seasons — when he’s a 3 win player or so — but he’s probably worth that $100 M.
I’d rather have Jayson Werth I think on a 4 year, $50 M deal than Holliday at 6 and 100 though.
