I need a team

I am a young baseball fan currently living in the united states. i do not have a local team to cheer for, so i was wondering if any of you guys could help me pick a team to become a fan of. heres what im looking for :

1. History- I want a team that has been in existence for at least 40 years. No new stuff for me

2. Not Evil- I don't care how much history the yankees have, they are evil.

3. Different- I don't want to become another one of those annoying cubs fans that pop up everywhere. i am also undeserving, i have not suffered as a cub therefore i dont deserve to celebrate as a cub

4. Not bandwagon- I am good with a team that made the playoffs, but i have no desire to root for the Red Sox, Phillies, or any other team of that nature

5. Not doormat, either- I dont want to waste my time with the rangers or nationals and the like. too much hassle for nothing

6. Interesting location- should i become a fan of a team, i would like said team to be located in an interesting city that doesn't suck, i.e. pittsburgh or detroit.

Thats all i'm looking for. any input is great

Seattle.

If only because they have some of the best writers and fans around, plus they’re on the upswing with some exciting and lovable players.

Nationals

they’ll be good in awhile and have awesome hats.

Seriously, it would help to know where you live and if there’s a TV station that shows any games of a certain team.

Hats?

My god, I hate the people who wear fashion caps of teams they couldn’t care less about.

If I had to pick a new team, I'd pick the Mariners too

Interesting team, some good young talent, new front office that understands stats, knows how to evaluate talent and takes advantage of market inefficiencies. It’s going to be fun to watch the Mariners gradually take control of that division over the next five years.

Except they are in the same division with the teams that are probably already 1 and 2 in farm systems and at least 1 front office that has been pretty good at evaluating talent and taking advantage of market inefficiencies.

I the Angels and A’s will continue to be competitive in that division. But I think analysis trumps scouting (IMO), and I think the Mariners brought in both good stats people and better scouting people than the prior administration. And while the A’s have a very good front office, they don’t have the M’s revenue.

As a Giants fan I’ve always thought the A’s needed a long standing rival. Someone that just will not get out of your way year after year after decade. The 70’s & 80’s they had the Royals & the Twins ( both out of the division now) and the Angels are doing that now but if you have 2-3 teams doing that one of them will be the team you love to see humbled. The Bay Area will turn out for those kind of games even in a crappy park ( ie Candlestick).

I don't know

the A’s and Rangers are so deep in young talent and the Angels have so much money, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mariners don’t win the division in the next five years.

by Brendan Scolari on Jan 5, 2009 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

The M's have the money too.

I don’t know about the next five years, but if Seattle’s upper management doesn’t screw Zduriencik and company over because of a bad year or three, I can see them changing that team pretty quickly.

by R.J. Anderson on Jan 5, 2009 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

True

I’m not saying they won’t be good, they may very well be, but I certainly don’t see them “taking control of the division”. I mean I don’t think they’ll become the Red Sox of the last five years or anything, but I guess we’ll see.

Homer alert

(not this one)

The Oakland A’s fit all your criteria I believe.

1. 41st year of existence in Oakland
2. Not Evil, they’re like the Anti-Yankees
3. They don’t have fans anywhere, much less everywhere.
4. Haven’t made playoffs in 2 years, and again like no fans anyway so certainly no bandwagoning.
5. 35/1 to win the World Series, (I got 60/1 in Vegas shipit one time please) right in the middle of the pack.
6. Doesn’t get enough credit with its more popular neighbor San Francisco to the west, but there’s a lot of culture in Oakland (and the Bay Area in general).

though if you do go for oakland, watch out

you might find yourself traded to another team in a few years time for a couple of up and coming fan prospects.

seriously, though, Oakland are great. other points in the A’s favour:

1. It’s warm here most of the year
2. The stadium, though ugly as all hell, is easy to get to from the airport. and easily accesible by public transport, so no car rental needed.
3. Farm system is very strong at the moment, so if they do suck this year, you can say to people ripping on you ‘well, just wait, there are anderson / cahill / etc etc coming through the system’. that’ll learn them, plus make you look really cool and with it when they win the WS in 2011/12.
4. They’ve just resigned Giamoid!

Elimination

Sounds like you haven’t eliminated St. Louis, LA, San Francisco, NY Mets, Atlanta, and Oakland. Maybe the Twins are still in it? O’s, maybe?

I’m a Giants fan, so I’m totally biased, but I’ll make my case:
History – most wins in baseball history, most players in the hall of fame, and a number of the greatest players of all time – Mays, Bonds, Marichal, Matthewson, McCovey, Mel Ott, it goes on…

City/Ballpark – Come on, it’s San Francisco. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but an impressive, international city with a lot of history. Some have argued AT&T park is the best park in the game. It certainly has a spot in the top 5. You can hit the ball into the frickin’ water for chrissakes!

Farm system – The Giants have a very good farm system, with a number of future stars who will be making an impact in the next 2-5 years… they are a team on the rise and they should be good soon and for awhile.

Rivalry – What fun is having a favorite team if they don’t have a foil? The Giants and the Dodgers have the oldest and one of the best rivalries in baseball, they moved west together, and I believe some people have even been shot over it in recent years… maybe I should leave that part out… they also have a fun regional rivalry with the A’s.

And they even have one of the best announcing teams out there. Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow are an amazing (and hilarious) team, and they have Jon Miller (WITHOUT Joe Morgan!).

They have a decent following nationally, but certainly not to the point of a bandwagon. Just what you’d expect from a team with a rich history and a number of great eras of baseball.

If I was going to make arguments for any other teams, it’d probably be the A’s and the Cards. The A’s have been doing it with no payroll the last decade, always underdogs, the “Anti-Yankees” as it was said before. They have a new park coming, that should help them compete a little better financially. And the Cards have the most championships in the NL, and an impressive history.

Brian Sabean figures that if he buys enough bottles, one of them is bound to have lightning in it.

St. Louis Cardinals almost a perfect fit

1. History — Obviously the Yankees have an amazing history. I don’t think you can argue that another team has a superior history to the Cardinals besides the Yanks.
2. Not Evil — The Cards are very very not evil. Their rival is the Cubs. In face the team and its fans are almost too nice (witness the gnashing of teeth at Aaron Miles’ departure). Albert Pujols is personally buying shoes for over half of all the orphans in the Caribbean, and Stan Musial single-handedly saved unicorns from extinction.
3. Different — Sure, they’re a classic franchise. But when was the last time the Cardinals were “cool”? Where’s the Midwest Media Bias? 2006 doesn’t count, because they were the annoying, mediocre team that wasn’t supposed to win. St. Louis will always fall behind NY, Boston, LA, Chicago, often even the likes of Philly, San Fran etc. in terms of national attention. Even our media exports such as Bob Costas and Joe Buck move on to bigger “better” things. This ties into #4 and #6, by the way…
4. Not Bandwagon — Again, maybe in the heyday of the “MV3” and all that. But they Cardinals are just starting to become good again after bottoming out in 2007. No bandwagons here, at least for a while.
5. Not Doormat, Either — The Cards have not truly been bad, other than 2007, for a long time, and appear to be on the upswing again (at least in my opinion). The farm system has also dramatically improved, recently ranked #8 by Baseball America. They were pretty much in the basement a few years ago. The team continues to get younger and more exciting.
6. Interesting Location - OK, this is the tough one… St. Louis is a very strange small/big city-town. The actual city itself is tiny (3-400K residents I believe), but it is its own county-separate from St. Louis County. The metro area, which spills into Illinois, is much bigger. Not the cosmopolitan megacenter of Chicago, but it has its charms. People are pretty nice, can’t drive worth a damn, public transportation ain’t great, but the Arch is cool, everything within the city limits is a patchwork of nice and very very not nice neighborhoods, etc.
7. Did I mention we’re the Cubs’ worst enemy?

Oh, and on second thought

I am not actually sure if the Cards are Baseball Amerca’s official #8 farm system, or if they were just one analyst’s #8 pick. Sorry if I was incorrect about that one.

by mattybobo on Jan 5, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

Cards are absolutely the perfect fit

I realize St. Louis might not be the most enchanting place in the U.S. but it is (basically) at the confluence of America’s 2 largest rivers and was right on the path Lewis and Clark took westward. Beyond that, however, is the fact that the Cards have such regional appeal. They’re not really St. Louis’s team so much as they are the Midwest’s team.

You should be in St. Louis on game day in the summer time. Cards’ fans are visiting from Tennessee, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas….Hell, I’m from Oklahoma and have lived all but 2 of my years in Texas, have been to St. Louis 4 days in my life and have been a diehard Cards’ fans since I knew what a baseball was.

by chuckb on Jan 5, 2009 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

We *might* be biased, though...

I dunno. I’ve always thought of the Cardinals as one of only a few teams that really impresses you with their history, but makes a surprisingly small amount of people say to themself “I just hate the Cardinals!”
Maybe I don’t talk to enough Houston fans or something…
Fun story—a year or two ago I was chatting with my friend’s father, who started having children very late in life. They lived in St. Louis for a number of years, but were originally from the Northeast by way of Florida. He told me that as a kid he was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and used to hate it when the Cardinals came to town, because their left handed hitters would abuse the short right field wall. They are still loyal Cardinals fan too, despite moving from St. Louis to Massachusetts.

by mattybobo on Jan 6, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

I do hear that Cardinals fans are great and St. Louis is a great baseball town.

Not sure how important that is to someone not in St. Louis, though.

Pirates (same, but for the future. if you want to root for a team that’s sucked for a while but should be much better over the next few years, this is your pick. Pittsburgh can be fun in certain ways, too)
Mariners (same as Pirates, but shorter period of suckitude and have more money to spend. huge intelligent online fan base)

Yea

1. History- We’ve barely got 40 years, but it’s a history and an interesting one. The Mets also incorporated some of the old Dodgers/Giants history.

2. Not Evil- The Mets are the anti-Yankees.

3. Different- The Mets have some annoying fans but the team has always been a little different, from the hilariously bad teams of the 60’s to the rock star mentality of our 80’s stars.

4. Not bandwagon- After the way these last two seasons ended, I’d say the Mets have been attracting 0 bandwagon fans.

5. Not doormat, either-The team is very good.

6. Interesting location- NYC

Otherwise I’d agree with the Mariner’s recommendation. The M’s have great writers and are on the upswing .

The giants kind of are doormats right now, which you wanted to avoid, but who know, in a few years, we may be good. Lincecum/cain are a great base for a team, and getting to watch them is a great consolation prize when watching a losing team.

I myself am an A’s fan, so I won’t try to sell you on them because of my bias. But some other teams I’d follow if I were choosing a new team:
Rays (although they may becoming too trendy a pick and are competing based on fortuitous circumstances)
Giants (although this offseason withstanding, Sabean is a tough GM to root for)
Cards (I got nothing bad to say about the Cards but that they moved ahead of the A’s in WS titles because of a lucky ’06)
Mariners (whose online following is probably the best group of bloggers out there)
Braves (whose window of contention may be closing)

And might be bandwagon. They will be good for several years though. If he stays with them through the bad times that will eventually come, he’ll lose any bandwagon labeling. And DRB rivals many M’s blogs, IMO.

That said, I’m still suggesting the Sox, but only if this kid will be willing to stick it out if we have a rough patch. His unwillingness to root for a current bad team doesn’t help.

I would have to say the A’s besides the Cards. They have a lot of young guys with hope of still making the playoffs which makes a fun team to watch. A good minor league system is very important if you want to be serious about following baseball also. Just in case your team tanks it one year at least you can still talk about how your prospects are doing.

Last 3 shouldn't be that much of a factor in your division.

Even though I love unis and similar stuff, colors shouldn’t keep you from liking a team. I wouldn’t care in the Sox wore orange, as long as they were still the Sox.
And you have to stick with a team, even if they aren’t the best. A better division makes for more interesting baseball, anyways.
The pop culture thing is a joke. It’s “popular” culture, which means it can change at anytime – such as when the Yankees aren’t winning the WS every year. There’s a lot less Yankee fashion caps being worn now.

GIANTS

Let me add to the Giants case a little bit here. Some people seem to forget that the history of the team goes back, way beyond the SF days. The giants were a part of the original teams in New York, along with the yankee’s and dodgers. Furthermore, there’s a lot to look forward to these days as a giants fan. We now have one of the best pitching staffs in the history of baseball with Cain, Lincecum, Johnson, Zito, and Sanchez. Then we have players coming from the farm system that only brightens our future, for instance there’s Bumgardner who was pitcher of the year in triple A last season!

PS: Giants stadium has the best garlic fries in all of sports :)

history

Don’t the giants have the most hall of famers, or close to the most? They’ve obviously had many great players.

As for historical moments, there’s the catch, the shot heard round the world, bonds home run records, etc.

And to add on to what jdpackersrule said, the stadium is also incredibly nice (I guess this only matters if you’re close enough to get to games). Although even on tv, it’s a nice view.

A's

If you do go with the A’s, definitely read Moneyball by Micheal Lewis, It will put you in the right direction as a fan. And you’ll learn to love Billy Beane. As a Giants fan and hating the A’s for years, that book as given me some newly found respect for the team. It discusses how they find ways to win on one of the lowest budgets in baseball.

plus

they’re making it into a film!

when did we stop using adverbs proper?

Isn't Pitt casted as Beane?

this one is easy

St. Louis Cardinals:

1. History- they have the best history of any team… Bob Gibson, Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby, the 60s teams, Dizzy Dean, Albert Pujols, The Wizard, etc etc etc

2. Not Evil- nope, not evil

3. Different- yes, Whitey Herzog in the 80s was different with his basestealing teams… they emphasize defense like no other, and just go look at Viva El Birdos, now that’s different

4. Not bandwagon- I moved to Chicago and remain a Cardinals fan despite the popularity of the Cubs. I’ve been a Cards fan since the early 80s and have very rarely been disappointed

5. Not doormat, either- Cardinals are like the good guys to the evil Yankees, the 2nd winningest team in history

6. Interesting location- STL is pretty interesting, heck, there’s interesting things everywhere

BOO!!!

Have fun watching Manny drop a ball per game in LF.

For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. There’s always that certain event or certain player that draws to the sport and draws you to a team. For me, Nomar Garciaparra was that reason. - Nick Coviello: I Try To See Rocco, But All I Think Is Nomar; 1/9/09

And

Have fun watching him knock the $hit out of balls past LF.

There's a point at which his defense ineptitude will eclipse his offensive success.

Nice sig, btw. Can’t put the Citi logo on it because of MLB rules.

You could have done worse

But you could have done better. (cough Cardinals cough)

I only am who I am because I was born that way. I have a gift and I'm trying to not be selfish about it, but to use it, OK? Jealousy will get you nowhere!

Good choice.

You should have waited to see if Manny stayed.

Well, I'll appreciate for you to keep my zingers outta your mouth!

Yeah...

I sure hope he does, if he’s not too expensive. I’d like to pursue Ben Sheets.

Ian Johnson gets on one knee.
Sam Bradford gets on both.
