Garland signs with D'backs
One year deal believed to be in the $6-8 million range. So let's summarize:
Garland: turns down the Angels offer of arb which would've likely netted him an increase from last year's $12 million salary, has to settle for a one year deal worth maybe half that much (though there is likely an option). Results: FAIL
D'backs: Could have spent about the same amount of money on Randy Johnson, who was worth almost two more wins than Garland last year and a local favorite. Results: FAIL
Angels: Lose a pitcher with a FIP projected somewhere in the 4.4 area who they would have to overpay for and get a draft pick out of it. Results: SUCCESS

but being closer to your girlfriend?
well, you just can’t put a price on that. if i had to pick a number, probably around -$2M. garland really took a bath on this one.

It's not like the Angels didn't want him, though.
(Or am I mistaken?)

the angels didn't want him.
but garland’s agent should have been smart enough to stick them with jon.

Except that, at the time, I don’t think people thought the market was going to be this awful for marginal players.

well, i thought garland was going to be this year's lohse and that was before free agency even began.
seems to me that the writing was on the wall for a guy like garland by early december. but obviously there is some debate over that.

i also would note this
Given that, his decision to decline arbitration from the Angels was viewed as a surprise in the industry.

True
Although this offseason sort of started with Lohse getting 4/41. Obviously, that was terrible at the time, but now it looks even worse. I don’t think the market was really clear until after the arbitration deadline passed, but that’s debatable.

I had him pegged as the disaster contract of the off-season.
Shows what I know.

i said 1/$6M in october.
looks like i about nailed it. it doesn’t take a sabermatician to look at those peripherals and figure out you should stay away. there aren’t enough dumb front offices out there anymore.

there's only so much roster space in Philadelphia, LA, and KC

and houston. don't forget houston.
once they went a different direction, no one was going to give garland a multi-year deal.

houston never seemed a destination for garland
especially after the hampton signing, which occurred before garland had to elect arbitration.
it really has become quite amazing that you can pretty much count on one hand now the organizations that still make frequent big errors. really a sea change in the last few years.
