Zack Greinke's Extension
4/38.
Over the last three years Greinke's been worth an average of 2.5 wins, or 12.5 on the free agent market. Over his last three full seasons, he's been worth closer to 3.3 wins, remember Greinke missed most of 2006 dealing with personal issues The Royals are paying for just under 2.0 wins yearly with this deal, so that works out. Even if Greinke loses 0.3 wins per year we're looking at a total of 41 million in estimated worth. And if you use the 3.3 number, it's a steal.
Throw in two arbitration years and it's a solid deal for the Royals.
Nicely done Dayton Moore.

Dayton Moore needed a win
And Royals fans needed Dayton Moore to get a win. It’s been a long offseason. We needed this.

Keep in mind that he basically didn’t pitch in the majors at all in 2006 because of his emotional issues, and then he spent more than half of 2007 in the bullpen… I know we don’t have other past performance to go on, but given his youth and performance as a starter, I’d think he’s going to outperform this contract. So it is a very good deal by Moore (and I was shocked that Greinke and his agent would accept such a deal, although there are reasons to do so).
I don’t want to go on about this — it’s not like Dayton Moore pulled one out of his hat. It’s not exactly news that Zack Greinke is good and tha the Royals needed to lock him up. But given how the obvious has seemed to elude the Royals front office at every other turn this winter, I have to give them props on this one.
Especially now that the contract will so attractive that the Braves will have to give up Francoeur.
(Just kidding!)

Yeah, I edited in a line about his 2005.
So last three full SEASONS, not years.
That would be ~3.3 wins, or ~16 mil. So basically it’s a steal.

1.3 seasons as a starter can also be interpreted as he's yet to really prove himself, not just as he'll likely be even better.
I love Greinke, by the way.

true enough
I just think this is likely to be a good deal for the Royals.
And the surplus generated will be spent wisely, of course.

Extensions for Guillen and Bloomquist?
Ok. that was too mean. I’m sorry.

I know this offseason has turned Dayton Moore into a joke for most people...
…but one should recognize that there has been good along with the bad. Yeah, there were Guillen, Farnsworth and Bloomquist. But there were also Meche, Soria (Rule 5 acquisition), Soria (long-term contract), Greinke (long-term contract), and the 2008 draft. That doesn’t mean he’s good. The combination of good, bad and mediocre moves makes him a roughly average GM overall.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to imply he's a bad GM...
Just getting a easy shot in…
I think you’re correct in rating Moore as average. I’m not certain what the direction of the team is at the major league level, but from what I hear, he’s done a very nice job of rebuilding the scouting and minor league operations. So I’d have to assume that things are heading upwards in KC – just not sure how long until they get there – just like in Pittsburgh.

now all KC has to do is get a "Dan Fox" in the system
I’m not holding my breath.

well-deserved
I’m not totally off of Moore, but I was mocking him with that comment. When’s he’s spent money, other than the Meche deal and perhaps Dotel and Riske (who turned into a supplemental pick), though, he’s been pretty bad. my hypothesis is that while his scouting acumen and staff generally lends itself well to discovering young, “projectable” players, but he doesn’t quite grasp that performance record is way more important when it comes to established major league guys like Guillen, Farnsworth, etc.
