Pick On The Padres' Pitchers, Not Hitters
I was angered earlier today by a discussion forum comment claiming the Padres have one of the worst offenses of all time. Sure, they're scoring .6 runs fewer per game than NL average. But are there still people who don't realize PETCO is a pitchers' retort to Coors?
OPS+ isn't a perfect stat, but at least it treats OBP as equal to SLG and makes an attempt at a park-adjustment. With PETCO's extreme park adjustment, the Padres' hitters are ranked only sixth-worst in terms of OPS+ and are barely behind two other teams:
98 Colorado
97 Pittsburgh
96 San Diego
93 Arizona
93 Cincinatti
92 Los Angeles
89 San Francisco
88 Washington
That's right, the Rockies and Padres have demonstrated almost the same level of offensive talent this year, even though the Rockeis have scored 108 more runs.
What about on the defensive side? The Padres have a team ERA of 4.61, which is slightly worse than average. Park adjusting ERA+ shows them as the second-worst defensive team in the league. And given that they've fielded well, their pitchers are pretty darn bad -- only the dreadful Pirates are comparable:
93 Washington
92 Florida
92 Atlanta
91 San Diego
81 Pittsburgh
So yes, the Padres have been a bad team this year. But instead of blaming the offense, let's blame the awful pitching staff. And the Rockies? Their ERA+ is 98, same as their OPS+.
