The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached an agreement on a three-year deal with catcher Ryan Doumit that will take him through his salary arbitration years, a baseball source told ESPN.com.
Doumit is often injured, and as a result this deal is as much about security than anything. In 2008 Doumit was worth about 3 WAR. If we assume he can stay healthy and play near that level over the next three years he projects to be worth 3/30. Odds are, the Pirates are going to be paying him quite a bit less, which makes this a pretty nice coup if he does indeed stay healthy.

It's like the Pirates have gotten smart.
Anything changed in the past year?

There's a lot of offseason to go.
Give it time.

They did get a pile of crap for their franchise player.
And all the bad GMs are thinning out. The jury’s out on Huntington and Co.

I expect the Huntington era to blow out the Littlefield era.
And speaking of Littlfield, instead of trying and keeping it a secret, he finally came out in the open last year and declared his affiliation with the Cubs, instead of working for them secretly for the last six or seven years.

A lot of people(particularly Pirates fans) give them flack for not drafting Wieters.
When really, anything but what they did would have been appropriate. Does anyone know whether Heyward threatened to not sign with anyone but the Braves? It seems like someone should have picked him sooner, he was a big deal at the time.

The contract includes a club option that will take Doumit into free agency, the source said. It is believed the deal could be worth a total value of $20 million over four years or $30 million over five years.

And locking up peak years
He’s catcher entering his age 28 season, so, when the decline hits, he’ll be on his way out, if not out already.
