The Edwin Jackson/Matt Joyce Swap
A bit of what I said on DRB:
Joyce is a young, power-hitting corner outfielder with good defensive skills. His minor league stats are pretty impressive, considering he's been young for his league. He'll swing and miss (and strike out) but his walk percentages have been consistently over 10% throughout the minors. Dave Cameron compares him to Jayson Werth, that seems like a pretty good comparison. He's under team control for six additional seasons, and he's only 24 years old.
And on Edwin:
Based on what we know at this moment, the Rays win this and it's not particularly close. Jackson has the physical tools, and the arguments have been stated constantly, but at the end of the day he's yet to show the results or even the processes that reflect on the potential. Thank goodness he has more value to some than I imagined.
In case you couldn't tell, I like the deal for the Rays.

I cannot believe the Tigers liked Edwin Jackson more than they liked J.J. Putz.

One year versus, what, four?
Starter vs. reliever? I can see it.

Good reliever beats bad starter when you consider the roles
Say Putz gets one spot in the pen, and E-Jax one in the rotation. Putz is far better comparing to his peers in the pen than E-Jax is compared to his, it’s about expectation.
This is a bad trade for the Tigers, and it’s hard to look at it from a different angle. Maybe you can only say Joyce’s wOBA is kind of low.

You'd be surprised.
If Putz is a 60 IP 3 FIP 1.5 pLI reliever he’ll save 17.5 runs.
If Jacksin is a 180 IP 4.9 FIP 1 pLI starter he’ll save 17 runs.
Are both of those events likely? Maybe not, but it’s certainly possible that a good reliever is better than a bad starter.
Also most of Joyce’s value (at this point) stem from his awesome defense.

So I heard about Joyce
I really don’t know much about him, or pretty much any other Tigers prospect since they traded Miller and Jurrjens (except for, of course, Porcello). This seems like a pretty good trade for the Rays, and one the Tigers wouldn’t even need to do if they weren’t dumb at the first place (they’d still have Jurrjens and that other kid they sent for Renteria).

Wow...
I’d say this is a complete steal for the Rays. The send someone who probably doesn’t even fit into their rotation in 2009 for a guy who, worst case scenario, is the left handed side of an OF platoon.

God, E-Jax is awful
I’m surprised the Rays got anything out of that….
