Padres Pick Up Brian Giles' 2009 Option
Well, I would hope so. This move costs the Padres only $6MM and they're getting another season from the most productive right fielder of 2008. On the free agent dollars scale, Giles' 2008 production was worth $24MM.
Hank Blalock's 2009 option was also picked up, by the Texas Rangers. The cost? Also $6MM.

I thought it was a misprint when you said he was the most productive right fielder in 2008, but the numbers don’t lie. Definitely a no-brainer move by the Padres. I wouldn’t expect the same kind of production next year, probably around .280/.375/.425, but still easily worth it.
I hate the notion
that a player’s buyout doesn’t count in what the team has to pay for him.
Then again, if the Padres have to pay $6 million million for him, then maybe he really is the best right fielder in the game!

They have to pay the $3MM buyout.
But since they have to pay him the money no matter what, their choice is really whether they want to spend an additional $6MM to have him on the team in 2009.
Or am I missing your point?

No, I got that loud and clear
but they’re the ones that put the buyout in his contract, it isn’t like they don’t have to pay him that amount of money. It isn’t like the buyout just appeared there; it was a decision of him being gone for 3 mil or there for 9 mil, not him being gone for 0 and there for 6 mil. It’s pointless really, but it irks me that people don’t include the buyout for sentimental purposes.

Brian Giles is a dumbass, and he sucks hard
Ok, he doesn’t, he’s great and is likely a nice guy. But I’m still pissed he blocked his trade to the Sox. He would have been a great, great pickup.
Mother---- him and John Wayne!
Yes, the poor Red Sox... I wish they could get some good players for once
OMG Banny. FWIW I am only crdtng u w/3 runs allwd bc of DDJ OMFG

If he blocked a trade to the Royals
You would have been pissed as well, even if KC had the best OF in the world. It’s more about a guy not wanting to play for your franchise, which means he doesn’t wanna play for YOU.
I take these things very seriously. :)

He wanted to stay in San Diego.
I don’t think it had anything to do with the Red Sox as a franchise. 99% of players want to play for orgs like the Sox, other other percent have personal reasons (like family) placed above playing preferences.

Yeah, I know
I think he would have been a great pickup, other than that I was mostly kidding about everything else. I mean, “KC” and “best” in the same post? :)

That "KC", of course, is the Royals
Because the Chiefs have the best stadium in football, IMO.

just giving you a hard time, of course
Tell you what — the Red Sox trade J. D. Drew for Jose Guillen, and we’ll call it even

I decided to pop over to DePo's blog today to see what's said there.
His stuff is expected and boring, but there’s some interesting stuff from the readers.
Like this:
How does Brian help you get to a Championship level if he does not have winning experience? what has he won?
If the rumors our close to being correct, is one player really worth 23% of the team’s annual payroll?
Why should a fan spend their hard earned dollar for a team void of any chance of success.
Good luck I think I will support a team that supports their fan base.
Is Giles a solid player? Yes. Is he a productive player? At times. But what, exactly, makes him a championship player?
Sigh.
I’m so tempted to modify our user agreement to forbid posting of ridiculous comments from other sites. I don’t need this kind of stress at 9am on a Saturday.

That makes my brain hurt.

imagine how depodesta feels.
I picture him typing up thousand-word replies, hitting preview until he gets them just right, then deleting them… then crying a single tear into a glass of 40Y Laphroaig.
