Andruw Jones- 16.5 Million for 3 homers, 14 rbis, and .189 average

Richie Sexson- Under Permorming

Erik Bedard- 220 K's last year

Erik Bedard was really good when he wasn't hurt.

When you’re talking value over the course of a season, it’s not fair to hold injuries against a player.

Erik Bedard hurt himself in his very first start.

He was pitching injured all year, making the stats fairly impressive given the circumstances.

As a braves fan...

I’ve got to go with Jeff Francoeur.

Somehow, .239/.294/.359 coupled with no steals to once caught gets 155 games and 650 appearances at the dish.

What’s even more shocking is that he got intentionally walked five times!

by BraveBronco0121 on Oct 18, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

Eh, his wOBA+ was 89.

Below average, but not atrociously bad.

i take back the bad range.

but yes, his offense was really poor, especially considering it was in the NL with a decrepit OBP and over 650 plate appearances.

Justin’s stats have him at -8 runs offensively, 0 for fielding, and -8 for position

i disagree, if "LVP" is defined at "least productive"

I’m going by Justin’s stats which use linear weights, a position adjustment, and fielding (no throwing arm, which would help Francoeur by, say, five runs). Are you defining LVP differently or disagree on methodology? Here’s everyone at least 10 runs below replacement:

Corey Patterson (-14 off, 4 def, 10 tot) -
Matt Diaz (-6 off, 4 def, -10 tot) -
Felipe Lopez (-7 off, 3 def, -10 tot) -
Juan Castro (-9 off, 2 def, -11 tot) -
Andruw Jones (-14 off, 3 def, 11 tot) -
Jose Vidro (-4 off, 7 def, -11 tot) -
Ross Gload (0 off, 15 def, -12 tot) -
Mike Lamb (-6 off, 7 def, -13 tot) -
Wily Mo Pena (-13 off, 0 def, 13 tot) -
Jeff B Francoeur (-8 off, 7 def, -14 tot) -
Tony F Pena (-22 off, 5 def, 17 tot) -
Wladimir R Balentien (-9 off, -8 def, -17 tot) —

Francoeur’s OBP was .294 and his SLG was .359. In the NL. Over 650 PAs. That’s pretty bad.

I now realize I underestimate just how atrociously bad he was this year.

199th out of 204 in wOBA in a corner outfield spot. Yikes. Now, if we’re including cost as a factor he doesn’t look nearly as bad.

But yeah, he’s way worse than I originally thought.

I'd go with Tony Pena Jr. or Wladimir Balentien

With dishonorable mentions to Jeff Franoeur, Wily Mo Pena, Mike Lamb, Ross Gload, Jose Vidro, and Andruw Jones

with money, sure

but he at least had a decent OPS (.738) — it was his awful fielding that drove him below replacement level.

which is why he's suck a sleeper for this prestigious award!

He’s racking them up this year, in addition to this possibility, he’s already won:

1) Most overrated by RBI (tied with Ryan Howard)
2) Most out-of-position player (tied with Pat Burrell)

Albert Pujols

For reasons including, but not limited to the following: He had fewer homers and ribbies than Howard, he failed to pitch at all, let alone string together a ridiculous amount of complete games/shut-outs, he didn’t play for the New York Mets, he failed to have any true break-out months or other short time stints (especially in September), he failed to single-handedly carry his team the play-offs.
Oh, you mean for real?
Francoeur/Jones are a pretty bad tandem. Tony Pena Jr. might do it for me though. I admit I’m kind of biased because I recently discovered Posnanski’s very nice website… Also, I kinda like the Mariners and want to say Vidro, but since he’s a DH he can only suck for 1/2 of the game.

there's no dispute

Andruw was simply the worst he could possibly be. Did anyone actually watch him hit?? My girlfriend even asked me one time watching him play “is there something wrong with that guy”?? He missed the ball by feet, not inches when he swung. The big question is what is his projected line next year???

by kdog on Oct 23, 2008 12:55 AM EDT reply actions

He's "valuable" because he sticks up for teammates.

Wait, he came in throwing punches AFTER Coco was already on the ground.

LVPs

the Reds middle defense: Paul Bako at catcher, Jeff Keppinger at shortstop, and Corey Patterson in centerfield. no other team boasted such an unholy trifecta.

Tek, Lugo, and Coco/Ells.

There was a point when none of them were hitting. And all of them have a few issues defensively.
