Stark on Santana
Here's the link, I'm not really going to justify this with anything outside of a small table:
American League MVP Candidates by WARP| Player | WARP |
|---|---|
| Johan Santana | 10.2 |
| Derek Jeter | 8.6 |
| Joe Mauer | 8.1 |
| Jermaine Dye | 7.8 |
| Justin Morneau | 7.1 |
| David Ortiz | 7.0 |
| Frank Thomas | 4.7 |
And for anyone wondering, Alex Rodriguez has a higher WARP score than Frank Thomas, yet one is blasted and one is worshipped. And oh yeah, Nick Swisher is worth 1.5 WARP more than Thomas. I don't get upset with the actual selections for these awards, because they are meanginless in the long run (unless of course, the lack of one of these awards helps to keep a player out of the Hall of Fame somewhere down the road) but I am bothered on occasion by the way the cases are presented by members of the media.
If you're going to call it the Most Valuable Player award, give it to the player who had the most value, whether it be starting pitcher or an offensive player. Santana is almost 2 wins better than the next highest American Leaguer, so I have a feeling this is going to turn in 1999 all over again -- although less of a screw up, as Santana's season is ridiculously fantastic, while Pedro's was damn near historic...although not quite as great as his 2000 campaign. Highest...ERA+...ever.
