manager stats

While watching the Diamondbacks defeat the Mets last night I began to ponder.  Would the Diamondbacks be this good if Wally Backman was the manager?  One thought led to another and I began asking myself: are there stats for managers other than their record?  I, being new to the world of statistics, would really appreciate if there was any other quantitative way of measuring a manager other than looking at his record.

Hmm...
The general consensus, from what I've gathered, is that managers aren't typically considered all that important / influential to on-the-field performance, although there are some exceptions.

There's a book out called "The Book on the Book" which took a look at managers and trying to score them. There was also an article somewhere that had a system for ranking the managers... I will see if I can find it.

pitchers
i think managers are most important in managing the pitching staff... which may or may not be aprt of their purview depending on the team...

i just thank God each day that Zach greinke's arm isn't in possession of Dusty Baker or Jeff Torborg right now... let Pena/Bell call for all the stupid sac bunts and steals they want if i care, just don't abuse the arm..
